Mister Lincoln Rose

Tonight I ran across a picture in one of my Grandma’s Scrapbooks that sent my mind wandering.

Mr. Lincoln Rose, Hybrid Tea Rose, President Lincoln, Roses, Hybrids, Herbert Swim, O.L. WeeksI ran across this picture of a Mister Lincoln rose which was an All-American rose selection in 1965.

I really like roses as you can tell by the many rose posts that I have made, including Winter Rose from yesterday.

Grandpa - Nursery - Picking Flowers in Field - Interstate Nurseries - MemoriesOne of the reasons why I like roses is that my Grandpa worked for a nursery for many years and would often bring us rose bushes to plant.

My Grandma also saved a lot of pictures and articles about flowers and plants and included them in her scrapbooks.

1960 Scrapbook Clipping - Abraham LIncoln - Frank MillerMy Grandma also saved a lot of articles and pictures of President Lincoln.

The Mister Lincoln rose brings together memories of both my Grandpa and Grandma.

With President Lincoln’s birthday coming up this week, I have been thinking about him and plan on writing another post about him.

But, back to the Mister Lincoln rose. The rose was introduced in 1964 and was an All-American Rose selection in 1965.

The rose was developed by Herbert C. Swim and O.L. Weeks who also collaborated on other well known roses.

The Mister Lincoln rose is a Hybrid Tea and has large double blooms with a rich red color. They also have a very strong scent.

Now my mind is wandering to the All-American Rose selections that I have in my rose garden. Perhaps Mister Lincoln needs to join them.

St. Patrick Rose - Raindrops on Roses - Yellow RosesThe St. Patrick rose was an All-American Rose selection in 1996 and is one of my favorites.

Tropicana Rose - November Roses - Tall Roses - Roses in morning sunThe Tropicana was an All-American Rose selection in 1963. I chose this one for my garden as it is a favorite of my Mother and one that my Grandpa had brought to us one year.

I may go looking for a Mister Lincoln rose bush next weekend.

Steven

My mother also kept notebooks with pictures of roses that she’d planted. There sure are some beautiful old-time roses.
