Vacation at the Dig Review – Week 1

I have blog block tonight, mainly as I am really tired. It has been a long day.

So, here is a review of the posts that I wrote during my vacation to Israel to participate at the dig at Lachish.

Dome of the Rock, Mount of OlivesThe vacation started with a flight from Frankfurt to Jerusalem. Here is a view of the Dome of the Rock from the roof of our hotel.

Kidron Valley, Temple Corner, South-East Corner of Temple MountWe spent Saturday Around Jerusalem, including a walk down into the Kidron Valley. Here is a picture looking back up at the Temple Mount.

Ramp to Lachish, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Archaeology, New vs. OldOn Sunday it was Back to the Dig at Lachish. It was nice to see the tel again after last seeing it a year ago.

Square Opening, Archaeology, Tel Lachish, digThis year I had the experience of Starting a Square from scratch. Later you will see pictures of what the square looked like after two weeks of digging.

Shephelah, Lachish, Archaeological Dig, Full MoonDuring the first week there was a Full Moon over Lachish. There are some beautiful vistas from the top of the tel.

Architecture, stones, walls, debris, archaeology, tel lachishOn Wednesday at the Dig we started to have structure appearing in our square. What did we find? Was it a wall?

Shock-wave tomography, ground penetrating waves, search for water system, tel lachishDuring the first week a team of researchers used Manual Shock-Wave Tomography to search for a water system at Lachish. Later we found out that the results show that there is probably a water system in the location they were hunting.

First Century Tombs, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Jerusalem, Joseph of ArimetheaAfter the first week of the dig we spent A Friday in Jerusalem. One of the places we visited was the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Here I am lying in a tomb that dates from the first century.

I just decided that I would only share the first week with you in this post. I will post the review of the second week soon.

You can find out more about each day by clicking on the links that are embedded in the text.

Now for some sleep before another long day of meetings.
