Tonight Series 4 of Sherlock premiered on Public TV. The much awaited new series featuring Benedict Cumberbatch is off to a good start, but unfortunately will also end very soon as each series only has three episodes. The good news is that there will be a Series 5 to look forward to.
The first episode tonight was very good, and I am looking forward to the other two. Hopefully I will see the next one on BBC next weekend in England.
When watching the episodes I always look for glimpses of the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have read all of them in the past, but want to read them again this year.
I do have a copy of The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in one volume. It includes all four novels and the fifty-six adventures.
However, the book is a bit bulky at 1,112 pages and a bit heavy since it is a hardback.
Instead, I will make use of a two-volume paperback edition that I have. Especially when I am traveling. Volume I is going with me on the next trip.
This is only possible since I solved The Case of the Missing Book. For quite some time I was unable to find my copy of this book.
I have a few other Sherlock Holmes items in my library. One of them is this copy of Casebook of Sherlock Holmes. This is not to be confused with The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes which is one of the collections of adventures. Instead this volume contains A Study in Scarlet, The Hound of the Baskervilles and three short stories (The Adventure of the Speckled Band, A Scandal in Bohemia and The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle).
The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of stories written in the Sherlock Holmes style by other authors including Stephen King and Anne Perry. There have been many additional Sherlock Holmes stories written by others and numerous movies and TV series based on the characters.
I will probably eventually read this group of stories, but it is not very high up on my to-read list at the moment.
Now to see how long it takes me to read through the Sherlock Holmes canon.
Have you read them all?
Steven
