Laughing Kookaburra

Tonight I took the scenic route when I walked to Wednesday night class.

I have taken the trail along Shrimptons Creek before and knew that I would have some good photo opportunities.

As I started down the trail I heard the raucous laugh of a Kookaburra.

Laughing Kookaburra - Shrimptons Creek Trail - Kookaburra LaughI started to look around to see if I could find one and see if I could get some good pictures.

Can you see the Kookaburra in the picture above? It is well camouflaged.

Laughing Kookaburra - Dacelo novaeguineae - Kingfisher - Here you see the Kookaburra a little better.

Does it make you think of the song that starts:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree

Laughing Kookaburra - Dacelo novaeguineae - Kingfisher Here the Kookaburra is taking a good look at me. You can see the underside of the Kookaburra and see the mostly white feathers.

Laughing Kookaburra - Dacelo novaeguineae - Kingfisher - Kookaburra Close UpI think that this is my favorite picture of the set. You can really see the coloration of the Kookaburra. I really like the blue on the wings and the orange on the tail feathers.

This Kookaburra is a Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae).

The Kookaburra is part of the kingfisher family and this species was once known as the Giant Kingfisher. Today it is known as the Laughing Kookaburra because of the raucous laughing sound that it makes.

The name Kookaburra comes from one of the native Australian languages.

I also like the look the bird is giving me. It is as if it saying “Are you done yet?”

You may see more pictures from this scenic walk in the next few days.

Which of the pictures above is your favorite?
