Harry Potter in Thai

Since I posted about Harry Potter in Different Languages earlier this year I thought I would share another of the Harry Potter books that I have in different languages. During a visit to Thailand last month I was able to pick up a copy of the first book in Thai. I searched for it in a book store and was unable to find it, but one of the admins at the office found and picked up a copy for me.

Previously I have written posts about Harry Potter in English, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, Brazilian PortugueseKorean, and Hebrew. I have books in only a small portion of the at least 75 different languages that the books have been translated into, but each of them have been picked up in the country of their language.

Harry Potter, first book, different languages, Thai, Thailand, Bangkok, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone Here is the Thai version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

You can see that the cover art is very different from the English version that we are used to. The title of course is in Thai. I really like this cover. It is a new anniversary edition of the book in Thai.

Harry Potter, first book, different languages, Thai, Thailand, Bangkok, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone The back cover is also very interesting and has well know scenes from the book displayed.

There are no fly leafs in this version of the book. However there are some nice pages full of Thai script at the front about the story.

Harry Potter, first book, different languages, Thai, Thailand, Bangkok, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone I did take a scan of the chapter title for the first chapter. You can see the Thai script here.

Can you read this edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

I definitely cannot as it is in a non-western script, and even then I would not be able to translate it.

I may not be able to read it, but it is a nice addition to my collection and has some sentimental value because of who gave it to me. Also, a nice memory of my trip.

Where will the next copy in my collection come from?

Thursday Then and Now – Bangkok Hotel

When I was in Bangkok last month I thought about the hotel I had stayed at during my first visit there 20 years ago. I wondered if I was saying in the same building. The surroundings were familiar and there were also some things that looked the same.

Bangkok Hotel, Bangkok Thailand, Hotel, lobby, abandoned hotel. The staircase in the lobby of the hotel got me thinking about the hotel from long ago.

Bangkok Hotel, Bangkok Thailand, Hotel, lobby, abandoned hotel.I found a picture that I took 20 years ago and there was a big staircase, but it looked different. There was a big lobby like the one this time, but it looked very different that in the the old picture. Definitely now the same, or remodeled from long ago.

Bangkok Hotel, Bangkok Thailand, Hotel, lobby, abandoned hotel.I also found a picture of the outside of the hotel from 2003 and it looked much different. I then decided to see if I could find the The Grand Hotel, Bangkok from back then and visit it again.

Bangkok Hotel, Bangkok Thailand, Hotel, lobby, abandoned hotel.I found the hotel that I staid in then and found that it was abandoned and that the lower levels had been stripped of the cladding. From what I could find it is undergoing a renovation and will be re-purposed some time in the future.

Bangkok Hotel, Bangkok Thailand, Hotel, lobby, abandoned hotel. The hotel building still looms over the area and will most like look very nice again when it is in use again. Perhaps I will see it again someday, but not 20 more years from now during a work trip.

Perhaps I will just take a look at it sometime in the near future using Google Maps to see if it has changed.
