Colorado Springs Graves

Earlier today I received a hint from Ancestry for one of my Great, Great Aunts. It was something that I already knew, but it started me thinking about when I visited her grave a little more than 20 years ago during a trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Colorado Springs, Elizabeth Garner, Cochran, Cemetery, 2nd Great AuntsI was visiting a friend in Colorado Springs and she helped me find the cemetery and the graves.

Colorado Springs, Elizabeth Garner, Cochran, Cemetery, 2nd Great AuntsThe hint had been for my Great, Great aunt Florine Virginia Gill. She is buried along with her mother Leah. She was almost 90 years old when she passed away in San Diego, but she was buried back in Colorado Springs with her Mother.

Leah E. Garner is my Great, Great Grandmother. Her birth name was Leah Elizabeth Ramsey. Leah was married to my Great, Great Grandfather Lorenzo Dow Cochran. Late in life she married John Wesley Garner. He passed away four years later, but she still used his name at the time of her death. Leah was living in Goodland, Kansas when she passed away.

Colorado Springs, Elizabeth Garner, Cochran, Cemetery, 2nd Great AuntsThe cemetery in Colorado Springs has the graves of four of her nine daughters. She also had three sons.

Leah was the fourth daughter and just older than my Great Grandmother Lottie Cochran.

Leah was married to William Francis Gill. You can see here that she died at the age of 35. She died in Goodland, Kansas.

William then married Leah’s younger sister Florine in 1926, but he died four years later.

Colorado Springs, Elizabeth Garner, Cochran, Cemetery, 2nd Great AuntsMary was the sixth daughter. She was married to Marion Underwood from 1917 to 1936.

Colorado Springs, Elizabeth Garner, Cochran, Cemetery, 2nd Great AuntsI just noticed that I should have started with Georgia Pearl. She was the second daughter. She was married to Frank Sturdivan.

It is actually interesting that none of these women were living in Colorado Springs when they passed away. I know that my Great, Great Grandmother was living there in 1923 so perhaps she was still living there in 1924 when her daughter Leah passed away.

Arbor Day 2022

This has been a long week since I have been commuting to the office all week to teach a course. So, I decided to re-post something I wrote six years ago.

Today was Arbor Day. Someday I want to write a post about the history and significance of Arbor Day, but this is not that day. I am too tired.

I will say that I have some great memories of visiting Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City which was the home of Julius Sterling Morton who was the originator of Arbor Day in America.

Tonight I will share some pictures of trees or tree related items, which is what Arbor Day is all about.

Tree Guide, Julia Ellen Rogers, Trees East of the Rockies, Doubleday, Page & Company, 1926While looking for tree pictures I ran across this picture that I shared in a post titled Old Nature Guides.

Black Locust Tree, Backyard, Grass, Lawn, SpringHere is one of the trees in my backyard. This is from several years ago when it was just about a year old.

Picnic Bench, Tree, Rowntree Mill Park, Toronto, CanadaArbor Day makes me think about big old trees like this one in Rowan Mills Park in Toronto.

Orchard, Barn, Cloudy Day, Overcast Day, Sunday Afternoon WalkOf course Arbor Day is about planting and caring for trees, so it also makes me think of my friends’ walnut orchard that is just in the beginning stages.

Pick up sticks, lay them straight, mulching, pruningI sometimes help out in the orchard like when I helped pick up sticks. See my post: Five, Six, Pick up Sticks

Red Tree - Fall Color - Fall Foliage - California Color - Red TreeOf course one of my favorite times of year to see trees is in the fall when they are full of color. This is a beautiful tree that is front of my office.

Arbor Day also makes me think of one of my favorite books. Click on the following link, A White Bird Flying, to find out why I think of this book on Arbor Day.

I also saw some trees that were waiting to be planted when I drove by a park on the way home.

Have you ever planted a tree on Arbor Day?
