Virtual Hike to The Geographic Center of the United States

The latest leg on my Virtual Hike was from the Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, Kansas to The Geographic Center of the United States.

Geographic Center of the United States, Lebanon, Kansas, Smith County

You can see that it was only about 100 miles so it only took a couple of weeks of walking.

Gaylord Kansas, William BuntI picked a route between the two points that would pass through Gaylord, Kansas. This small town has a family connection.

William and Eliza Bunt, Eagleville, Missouri, 4th great grandparentsGaylord is where my 4th Great Grandparents William and Eliza Bunt were living in the late 1800’s and where William passed away.

Gaylord, Geographical Center of the United States, Lebanon, Smith County KansasGaylord is very close to The Geographic Center of the United States, so when I say my family lived in the middle of the country I am being very precise 🙂

Geographic Center of the United States, Lebanon, Kansas, Smith CountyHere you can better see the location in relation to the larger cities in the center of the country.

Geographic Center of the United States, Lebanon, Kansas, Smith CountyThe marker is not too exciting. It is simply a stone pyramid with a flagpole coming out of the top. Of course it has a plaque stating that it is the Geographic Center. I visited this location many years ago when Kansas was part of my territory as a Field Service Engineer.

I saw a lot of Kansas then, and ended up visiting every single county. Believe me, Kansas is not so flat.

I am well on my way to the next destination which does not have a family connection. However, it is known for something interesting. Stay tuned 🙂
