Outlaw Reading

Earlier this year I read a few books about outlaws.

Jesse James Last Rebel, t.j. Stiles, OutlawsTo be more specific I have been reading books about Jesse James and the Younger Gang.

Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War by T. J. Stiles was an interesting read as it portrayed Jesse as never ceasing to give up on the Civil War. He was never able to integrate back into society because of the impact the war and his role in the conflict had on him.

The rise and fall of Jesse James, Robertus LoveThe Rise and Fall of Jesse James by Robertus Love was a very pro Jesse book. The book was published in 1926 and Love was able during his research to talk to actual eyewitnesses of some of the events he writes about.

Outlaws: The illustrated history of the James-Younger Gang, Marley BrantOutlaws: The Illustrated History of the James-Younger Gang by Marley Brant is a very straight forward history of the James and  Younger brothers. The book is full of pictures and was able to draw on decades of new writings about the outlaws.

James Younger Gang, OutlawsThe picture on the back of Outlaws is of the Younger brothers who were in jail in Minnesota. They are joined by one of their sisters in this picture.

It is more the Youngers than the James brothers that interest me. My 3rd great grandmother Sarah Sears was a first cousin of Catherine Younger.

Catherine was a first cousin of the Younger brothers.

Shot all to hell, jesse james, younger gangA couple years ago I also read Shot all to Hell: Jesse James, The Northfield Raid, and the Wild West’s Greatest Escape by Mark Lee Gardner.

The books all cover the same events through different lenses. It is interesting to see the differences in some of those events.

The research continues as I look for more books to read about the outlaws and the people they came in contact with. There are also some more interesting family connections to outlaws to learn more about.
