More Bees

Earlier this month I wrote a post about A Bee in my Rose Garden.

Valley Carpenter Bee, Rose Bushes, Pollinators, Xylocopa varipunctaIn the post I shared pictures of a valley carpenter bee (Xylocopa varipuncta). Above is one of the pictures. The male bee is golden colored, and the female bee is black.

valley carpenter bee (Xylocopa varipuncta), black bee, female carpenter beeYesterday I was able to take some pictures of a female valley carpenter bee. Unfortunately most of them were out of focus as she was flitting from blossom to blossom.

Here is the best one. You can see the outstretched wings and the pollen patches on her body.

I received several comments that people had never seen a valley carpenter bee before. This is understandable as they have a limited range in the Southwest. They are mainly found in the Central Valley of California and in Arizona. However, they can sometimes be found in Nevada and New Mexico and other areas close to their main range.

Honey Bee, Orange BlossomI thought that I would also share a picture of a honey bee that I took earlier today. The honey bee is extracting nectar from an orange blossom.

I have found that the hardest part of getting bee pictures is patience.

You can also see how hairy a honey bee is. In contrast the female valley carpenter bee has a smooth abdomen.

Now I am craving a little honey.
