As tomorrow is President Lincoln’s birthday I am thinking about him tonight. My Grandmother was a big fan of Abraham Lincoln. Her scrapbooks contain many clippings about President Lincoln. Articles, cartoons and pictures are just a few of the many items.
I shared some of these in a previous post titled President Lincoln.
Tonight I will share four more items that I found in a scrapbook from 1959.
The first is a cartoon that I really like.
I really like this cartoon as it illustrates the importance of education. Since I am an adult educator, this has great meaning for me. We can all remember President Lincoln’s thirst for knowledge in the stories that are told about him as a youth and what he went through to learn.
I like this sketch of Abe. It brings back memories of reading about how he would split rails when he was young. Here you see a tall young man wielding the hammer that he uses to drive the wedge into the logs. As I type this I am having memories of splitting logs at scout camp in Colorado.
This picture was the earliest know photograph of Lincoln known to exist in 1959.Β This picture is a copy of a daguerreotype that was taken by N. H. Shephard in Springfield, Illinois in about 1846. At the time Lincoln was a congressman. An earlier daguerreotype was been discovered, so this is no longer the earliest photograph of Lincoln.
This last clipping is of a portrait of young Lincoln that was painted by Charles M. Shean. The caption for the picture in the clipping says that it was painted in 1919 and hangs in the Kennedy Galleries in New York City. I found this image on-line at a couple sites and the date is given as 1912, so maybe the caption is incorrect.
As I get to the close of this post and look back at the images, I see that all of them are of a beardless Lincoln. They are an interesting contrast to the more common pictures that we see of President Lincoln.
I hope you have enjoyed these pictures as you remember this great American on the 204th anniversary of his birth.

Great photos, thanks, Steven!
Nice post and the perfect topic for today! π
I especially like the 1959 cartoon. It brings back memories of stories that I read when I was a child about the young Abraham Lincoln.
My favorite President. I wonder how he would handle the presidency today, were he President??
