Lincoln’s Birthday II

Lincoln’s Birthday is coming up in a few days, so I thought I would share a few images of President Lincoln from my Grandma’s Scrapbooks.

Lincoln’s Birthday is a legal holiday in California. Many government offices will be closed on Thursday. Our local library system was closed today to observe Lincoln’s Birthday and will be closed next Monday for Washington’s Birthday.

President Lincoln, Lincoln Memorial, Lincoln's Birthday, President's Day WeekendThese images all come from a 1965 scrapbook.

The first is of the Lincoln Memorial. I am thinking of the time that I visited the memorial late one evening while doing some work in Washington D.C. many years ago. It was wonderful to look up at this great sculpture of one of our greatest presidents.

The sculptor of Abraham Lincoln was Daniel Chester French. He was a very well known sculptor and you would most likely recognize some of his other works. Hmm, I now have an idea for another blog post.

Lincoln and the Bible, Nation Under God, Lincoln's Birthday, President LincolnI really like this portrait of Abraham Lincoln by George Peter Alexander Healy that he painted in 1860. Healy painted several portraits of Lincoln, but this one is my favorite.

I also like the caption below the picture.

Lincoln and the Bible

“That this nation under God shall have a new birth of Freedom”

President Lincoln reading to Tad, Tad Lincoln, Reading Bible, President LincolnThe image above is based on a photo by Anthony Berger. President Lincoln and his son Tad are looking at a photo album.

President Lincoln, Tad Lincoln, Lincoln and the BibleThe caption that was below this picture in the scrapbook is not quite correct. It says that the President is reading to his son. I have also seen this image used as an illustration of President Lincoln reading the Bible to his son.

We do know that President Lincoln was a lifelong reader of the Bible. He used references and quotations from the Bible in many of his speeches and also in his writings.

Take some time to think about President Lincoln this week in honor of his birthday.

Who is your favorite President?

Steven
