To the Stores after Thanksgiving

Did you know that there is historical precedence to digging into the stores on the day after Thanksgiving?

First Thanksgiving - 1621 or 1623 - Plymouth Colony - Pilgrims - Brownists - Thanksgiving FeastThere is of course much debate about when the first true Thanksgiving was. Was it in November of 1621, or was it just simply a spontaneous harvest festival? Was it in July 1623 when they set a feast of Thanksgiving in anticipation of the arrival of the Anne and the Little James?

I will not go into the details of the argument in this post. However, I will focus on 1623 and the arrival of the Anne and the Little James.

The two ships were bringing much needed supplies to the colony as well as additional settlers. Supplies were running very low and when they heard that the ships would soon arrive they held a fast for several days and then a feast of Thanksgiving.

You may wonder how they knew that the ships were arriving. They had been spotted out to sea and a small craft brought the news to the colony. It took the ships a bit longer to arrive than anticipated and the feast was held before they arrived. Therefore, several of my ancestors were late for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Day - Pilgrims - Feast - Plymouth Plantation - Plymouth ColonyAt least three of my ancestors were on the Anne which arrived the day after the Thanksgiving feast. The Little James arrived about a week or so later.

Mary Becket later married George Soule who is my Mayflower ancestor.

Francis Sprague and his daughter Mercy Sprague were also my ancestors. Mercy later married William Tubbs.

Thanksgiving Plate, Turkey and Fixings, ThanksgivingEven though they missed the feast, I am sure that there were leftovers just like today. They were probably glad to finally eat something different than what they had on the ship.

Black Friday, Thanksgiving, ads, wrapperMost likely the colonists were digging into the stores on the Anne that same day as they were really anticipating the supplies that were sent.

Today, the stores have big sales to draw people through the doors and into the stores.

Ads, newspaper, Black Friday, Stores, salesHere you can see how many ads were in my newspaper yesterday. By volume they were about 75-80% of the bundle.

Black Friday Ads, ThanksgivingYou can see that there were quite a few ads and lots of specials. Unfortunately, many stores opened up on Thursday afternoon. I remember when stores did not open until a regular time on Friday, then they started opening early, then at midnight, now today they close for just long enough to get ready for the big rush.

Me, I stay home. However, I did go to Target this evening to pick up a few items. I talked to one of the workers that I know and she said that it was very busy today, but not as busy as yesterday.

If only they would go back to the historical precedent and wait until the day after Thanksgiving. Let the workers have a chance to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families.

A Long Thanksgiving

Today I had a Long Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving, Ads, paper, newspaper, Black FridayThe day started out with going out to pick up the newspaper. There was a very large newspaper this morning, however it was only two skimpy sections of news that was not even as current as a normal newspaper. The press deadline was much earlier yesterday, and the paper was really just a wrapper for all of the ads for Black Friday.

Thanksgiving, Rain Clouds, Cloudy Sky, Ag Country, Central ValleyIn the early afternoon I drove south to Patterson. The drive was beautiful with a clear sky full of clouds.

Now how can it be a clear sky with clouds? If you have been here in California the last couple of weeks you would know what I mean. The smoke has all cleared out of the Central Valley and the air is breathable again.

Table Setting, Thanksgiving, Feast, Thanksgiving Meal, Long ThanksgivingThe day was actually no longer than any other, but rather I celebrated Thanksgiving with a meal at the Long’s house. My friends Doug and Becky had an empty nest with all their children away so they invited me to share Thanksgiving with them.

The place settings were beautiful with some vintage plates and flatware. I have had several feasts with the Long’s and always enjoy eating off of these plates. They have only one drawback as they are a little small, but then there is an excuse for seconds 🙂

Small Turkey, Small Thanksgiving, Carving, TurkeyThe turkey was not too big, but with only three people you do not need much. It was still quite a bit, but two of their kids will be home for the weekend and will have leftovers to eat.

Food, Thanksgiving, Food LayoutHere is the food all laid out and ready for us to load up our plates. The asparagus adds a nice touch of color to the food.

Plate of Food, Thanksgiving, Turkey and TrimmingsHere is my first plate of food. It was all really good with the traditional tastes of Thanksgiving.

We had some great conversation during the meal and after and overall just had a great afternoon.

We talked about Family History, friends, work, religion and even a bit of politics 🙂

I also reflected on how it has been 397 years since my family first celebrated Thanksgiving in America.

Now to avoid the big stores tomorrow on Black Friday, although I may visit a few small stores.
