Are You Smarter than Your Teacher? – II

This is post number II of Are You Smarter than Your Teacher?

Psalm 119, Are you smarter than your teacher. Wisdom, teacherIn the first post I explained what is behind the title and covered the first two categories of the game I included in a lesson on Psalm 119.

Hebrew, How many letters, Psalm 119, aleph, betThe next category is Language.

Hebrew, How many letters, Psalm 119, aleph, bethHow many Letters are in the Hebrew Alephbeth? You may notice that I used Alephbeth instead of Alphabet. Just being a little playful as the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet is Aleph.

Hebrew, How many letters, Psalm 119, aleph, bethThere are 22 letters in the Hebrew alephbeth.

Hebrew, How many letters, Psalm 119, aleph, beth, acrostic, alphabetic acrosticWhat kind of Math question did I ask for Psalm 119?

It is an interesting category for a Psalm, but since I like Math it was a fun one.

Psalm 119, number of verses, Math, acrostic poemSome may know the number of verses off the top of their head, but if not there is an easy way to calculate the number.

We learned in the Literature question that Psalm 119 is an alphabetic acrostic and that there are eight verses for each letter.

Psalm 119, number of verses, acrostic poemWe also know from the Language question that there are 22 letters in the Hebrew alephbeth. Therefore a little multiplication give us the answer.

22 x 8 = 176

Psalm 119 has 176 verses.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and takes about 15 minutes to read out loud.

Knowing this was beneficial for George Wishart in the 1600’s in Scotland. Wishart had been sentenced to die by hanging. Custom allowed a Psalm to be sung before an execution and Wishart requested Psalm 119. His expected pardon arrived near the end of singing the Psalm and his life was spared. It was a good thing that he did not choose Psalm 117.

In the next post we will cover the Speech and Music questions.

Are You Smarter than Your Teacher?

This evening I attended  a Zoom Bible study. The subject of the study was Psalm 119.

This reminded me of a lesson I put together back in 2008 for a Summer Series at the Dublin church of Christ. The theme of the series was “Favorite Chapter of the Bible” and I chose Psalm 119.

Psalm 119, Are you smarter than your teacher. Wisdom, teacherI titled my lesson “Are You Smarter than Your Teacher”.  The inspiration for the lesson was of course the popular show “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader” which was hosted by Jeff Foxworthy.

Psalm 119.99, Smarter than your teacher, PsalmsThe title was based on the following verse in Psalm 119:

I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.

Psalm 119:99 ESV

Subjects, Smarter than Teacher, Game ShowI then came up with some subjects for which I would ask questions based on Psalm 119.

The subjects of course were all school subjects: Geography, Literature, Language, Math, Speech, Music, Anatomy and Phys Ed

Smarter than your teacher, Psalm 119, subjectsAs in the show I started with the bottom row and asked a question about Geography.

Psalm 119, Jerusalem, Geography QuestionWhere was Psalm 119 written?  The answer was give as Jerusalem, which is the most probable site. However, there are some scholars who contend that Psalm 119 was written while the Jews were in Babylon or possibly in other areas of Judah or Israel.

Game Show, Literature, Psalm 119The next Subject is Literature.

Alphabetic Acrostic, Psalm 119What type of poem is Psalm 119?

Psalm 119 is an alphabetic acrostic or an abecedarian poem. The first set of eight verses each start with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the second set with the second letter, etc..

In the next post we will cover the Language and Math questions.

I am not sure yet how many posts will be in this series and if they will be consecutive. If my mind wanders elsewhere I may slip a few posts in between the ones in this series.

But I will share the other questions and answers within the next week or so.

Keep tuned.
