A Travel Memory

This afternoon I had a memory pop up on Facebook that made me think.

travel memories, three continents in three days, long flightsI had to think back as to why I was going to be in the air for 24 hours during two days.

Then I remembered trips that I had to take to the UK over the holidays six years ago.

London Heathrow, British Airways, Long LayoverI made a trip to Glasgow the week before Christmas which ended with me flying home on Christmas Eve after also visiting customers in England.

Heathrow, Terminal 2, The Queen's TerminalThen after being home for Christmas and New Years I then flew back to London for another week of visiting customers.

Steventon Church, Jane Austen, Hampshire, RectorWhile there I visited Steventon where Jane Austen grew up.

Pembroke College, Cambridge University, Library, Pembroke LibraryI was also in Cambridge where I was able to visit campuses where my ancestors went to college more than 400 years ago.

San Francisco International Airport, SFO, United Airlines, ANA, Row of PlanesThen it was back home to sleep and repack before taking a flight to Shanghai to teach a course that had already been planned before the trips to England.

Eighteen hours after leaving the airport after my return from London I was back again to board the flight to Shanghai, Thankfully there were no delays as I had to teach the next morning after my flight that arrived late on Sunday.

Lots of memories from the trips to the UK and China as I look back at some of the pictures in posts from that time period.

I am trying to think how to say the following: I slept on three different continents in three consecutive nights of sleep. Should I also add in the night I spent in the air on the way to Shanghai?

Poem: Good Friday Night

Tonight I was looking through a scrapbook of poems that my Grandmother had saved.

One of the poems caught my eye since it is Friday night.

good friday night, archibald Rutledge, Sea of Galilee, poems, scrapbookThe poem is Good Friday Night by Archibald Rutledge.

Archibald Rutledge was the first Poet Laureate of South Carolina and a descendant of John Rutledge, who signed the Constitution and was a chief justice of the US Supreme Court.

The pictures illustrating the poem below were taken during my trips to the Sea of Galilee.

Good Friday Night

The Hills are folded in a mist

By Galilee; on Galilee

A silence comes, and it is night;

The stars awaken tranquilly.

Bird Flying, Galilee, Sea of Galilee, Galilee Hills, SunsetNight’s beauty mirrored in her dreams,

In Galilee; in Galilee

Sleeps, and the stars like spirit barks

More softly on a spirit sea.

Sea of Galilee, Israel, sunset, lakeThe winds sigh with immortal grief

O’er Galilee; and Galilee

Seems mortal and remembers all

That cannot be, that cannot be.

Galilee Sea, Sea of Galilee, Shore of Galilee, ReedsThe palms are moving in dim waves

By Galilee, on Galilee

The starlight falls on motionless

Blue waters of a quiet sea.

Sea of Galilee, Sunset, Poria Youth Hostel, Red SkyThe shores are hushed, the winds are still

On Galilee; o’er Galilee

The stars are setting far away;

And one has died for you and me.

Archibald Rutledge
