The French and Indian War

As I learn more about my ancestors I always try to find out more about what was happening around them. Recently I have learned more about some of my ancestors who lived at the time of the French and Indian War.

There were four separate wars that could be called French and Indian wars, but it is the fourth one (1754 – 1763) that is generally called the French and Indian War. For a listing of the other wars see my post: The Deerfield Raid

I am currently reading two books about the French and Indian War and they only cover this fourth war.

French and Indian War, America, Fred AndersonThe first book is The War the Made America: A Short History of the French and Indian War by Fred Anderson. It was written as a companion to a four hour PBS special titled The War that Made America.

I really like the first sentence of the Preface of the book.

Today, two hundred and fifty years after the French and Indian War, most Americans are no more familiar with its events and significance than they are with those of the Peloponnesian War.

Since very few Americans even know what the Peloponnesian War was about, this is a very strong statement.

The Adventure of the American People - High School American History Text Book - History - Graff and KroutIn the American History textbook that we used in High School there is only a very short section on the French and Indian War.

The French and Indian War: Deciding the Fate of North America, BornemanThe other book that I am reading is The French & Indian War: Deciding the Fate of North America by Walter R. Borneman.

This war did truly decide the fate of North America as it was the war that tilted the balance of power toward England in North America and set the stage for the Revolutionary War.

Jacob's Choice, Ervin Stutzman, Amish, Northkill Raid, Indian CaptivesIt was during the French and Indian War that my ancestor Jacob Hochstetler was captured by Indians along with two of his sons. Other members of the family were killed during the attack at Northkill.

Northkill Massacre - Northkill, PA - Amish Massacre - Leni Lenape Indians - French and Indian War - Hochstetler MassacreI have a synopsis of the event in my post The Light in the Forest. Conrad Richter wrote a short book that told a story that was very similar to what my ancestor went through.

New England Captives Carried to Canada, Emma Lewis Coleman, French and Indian WarAnother book that I have in my library is New England Captives Carried to Canada between 1677 and 1760 During the French and Indian Wars by Emma Lewis Coleman. I was really surprised at the number of captives who were carried off to Canada. However, as I learn more about my family history I run across more and more stories of family members who were involved in Indian attacks as many of them lived in frontier areas. If you have colonial American ancestors there is a good chance that they were affected by the French and Indian wars.

Back to researching 🙂

Labor Day – Grandparents

Today on Labor Day I have been thinking about the jobs that my Grandparents labored in.

Preacher - Grandpa - Weed, California - Preacher Grandpa - Midwestern School of EvangelismI will start with my Grandpa Yoder. I remember him most as being a preacher.

Lowenberg Bakery, Ottumwa, Iowa, GrandpaHowever, he had other jobs through the years like this one where he worked at the Lowenberg Bakery in Ottumwa, Iowa. For more of his jobs see my post Grandpa at Work.

Grandma - Remembering Grandma - Nurse - MemoriesMy Grandma Yoder worked as a nurse. I could not find a picture of her as a nurse, so will just post my favorite picture of her.

Grandpa - Nursery - Picking Flowers in Field - Interstate Nurseries - MemoriesI mostly remember my Grandpa Braman working at Interstate Nurseries. My grandpa would bring us roses, trees and other plants when he would visit. We always had a yard full of flowers.

Grandma High School Picture - Agnes Van DuzorMy Grandma Braman was a homemaker. I remember her most for the needlework she would do and also of course the many scrapbooks that she put together. I also remember her for her love of History and all of the genealogy work that she did on our family.

Silver Star Shows, Clifton and Sons, Brownville, Nebraska, Carnival, Admit OneHowever, my Grandma Braman did have one interesting job outside the home. Along with my Grandpa they worked for Silver Star Shows for many years. My Grandma would sell tickets while my Grandpa would run one of the rides.

For those of you who follow my blog on a regular basis I think you can see the influence that all four of my grandparents had on me.
