This weekend I flew from San Francisco to Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Of course most of you will recognized SFO as the IATA code for the San Francisco airport, but GRU may not make sense to you.
The IATA code for the Sao Paulo airport is GRU for the municipality Guarulhos where it is located.
I did not have a direct flight to GRU, but had to stop in ORD on the way. The picture above shows the 777 that I flew to Brazil on. It was an interesting shot with reflections of what was behind me in the window.
Do you know what ORD stands for? This is the IATA code for O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. You may wonder how ORD comes from O’Hare, but don’t tax your brain too much trying to figure it out. The ORD comes for a much earlier name for the airport before it was renamed to honor Edward “Butch” O’Hare.
The airport was originally called Douglas Airport for a large manufacturing plant that was built there. However, when Douglas closed down the facility it was renamed to Orchard Field for the community that had been displaced, Orchard Place, by the manufacturing plant. At that time the IATA code was created as ORD which has been retained.
Already my mind has wandered and you are probably more interested in my arrival in Brazil
The flight was long, but I finally made it to the GRU. Since we were one of the first flights in this morning it did not take long to make it through immigration, bag pickup and customs.
I was soon on the way to the car that was sent for me. In the picture above you see the driver pulling Clifford toward the parking garage.
We were soon on the way through the city to my hotel on the opposite side of the metro area. It was interesting to see all the graffiti along the way. There was also some really nice wall art, but mostly just a lot of tagging.
I got checked in at the hotel and it was really nice to see a bed. I did not get a lot of sleep on the flight and was really tired. I knew that I shouldn’t sleep all afternoon, but I did get a good 2-3 hour nap.
Sunset came early as it is winter in Brazil. I took this picture about 10 minutes before 6. There will not be much sunlight outside of work hours during the week on this trip.
I did walk across to a shopping center and wander around a bit before having dinner tonight. The shopping center will be much visited during the trip as the food court there will probably be where most of my evening meals will be eaten.
