Did you know that it was 59 years ago today that the Russians launched the first satellite?
The satellite was called Sputnik which means ‘Baby Moon’.
Four years ago I wrote a post about Sputnik after I ran across some clippings about the event in one of my Grandma’s Scrapbooks.
My Grandma not only saved clippings from the Des Moines Register, but also wrote about her own thoughts during this time.
This “moon” had an odd beep it came in over the radio several times. It was very high pitched on a very even beep. This radio of ours is a combination battery and electric portable. Went over several times. The Queen Elizabeth and her husband from England made a flying trip over and the U.S. President conferred with them. Her diplomat came over later. Everyone in high politics are worried about all this.
Can you imagine what people were thinking about this new technology from the Russians?
There was much speculation about what was going on. However, a few days later information was released about Sputnik which helped relieve the tension.
It was not long before the US also sent up satellites and the Space Race was on.
