The Spread of In-N-Out

I first discovered In-N-Out more than 20 years ago when I was still living near Kansas City, but traveling to California on a regular basis.

In-N-Out opened their first restaurant in 1948 and remained a California only restaurant chain until 1992 when they opened their first restaurant in Nevada. By that time they had almost 100 restaurants in California.

In-N-Out Hamburgers, Number 1, Combo Order, Burger and FriesI really enjoy having An In-N-Out Lunch. I don’t make it very often, but recently have been going about once every month. There is a location not far from my office where I usually go.

Pleasanton, California, In-N-Out, California CultureSometimes I will go with my students since many have heard about In-N-Out and want to give it a try.

My students come from all over the country and world and most of them do not have an In-N-Out near them.

Oh, back on subject 🙂 The next state that In-N-Out opened a restaurant in was Arizona in 2000. This was followed by Utah in 2008.

Nahum 1:7, In-N-Out Bible VersesSince In-N-Out uses fresh ingredients they have a policy to not open a location more than 500 miles from their distribution centers. They now have patty-making facilities in Baldwin Park and Lathrop, California and Dallas, Texas so have been able to expand even further.

I have seen the 500 mile policy mentioned in several news articles over the years, but this may not be the actual policy. The locations around Salt Lake City are about 700 miles from Lathrop or Baldwin City.

In 2011 In-N-Out opened their first restaurants in Texas and in 2015 opened a location in Oregon.

Of course, the state with the most locations is California. But, do you know which state has the second most?In-N-Out Burger, Tracy California, Burgers, hamburgersIt is actually a tie. Both Arizona and Texas have 29 locations today. However, that will change soon as Texas has 3 locations opening soon and Arizona only has one.

What state will be next?

My educated guess would be Oklahoma or Louisiana.

I would not be surprised to see an In-N-Out opening in Oklahoma City during the next couple of  years.

If Louisiana is the next state I would think it would be in Shreveport since it is just down I-20 from Dallas.

Of course, it could also be Arkansas with a location in Texarkana.

We will just have to wait and see.

However, I am glad that I live where there is an In-N-Out as it is often the place where I will go for a Back Home Burger.

Where do you want In-N-Out to open a location?
