Chinese Food

Just a quick post tonight as I am running a bit late after my mind wandered off to a couple unexpected research projects.

Tonight I will share some pictures of food in China. During my trip it was basically sleep, teach, work and eat. Not much time for anything else.

Chinese Restaurant, Pudong, China, Shanghai, Chinese CuisineHere is the restaurant where we ate most of our evening meals. I don’t know the name of the restaurant, but if you can read Chinese you can see the sign in the picture.

I mostly let my students pick the dishes, but I would also ask for certain things I would see in the colorful menu. Of course, sometimes what I really wanted they were out of.

The presentation of the food at the restaurant was really good and it was also very delicious. Chinese Food, Mystery Ingredients, Meat and Vegetables, Shanghai Food

On this trip I followed my first rule of eating food in China.

Eat first before you ask what it is

I would have missed out on some delicious dishes if I would have asked before I ate. I don’t remember exactly what was in each dish, but most of them were delicious.

I think this might have been chicken stomachs with some interesting mushrooms and greens.

Chinese Food, Shanghai Food, Chinese Restaurant, Pudong

I really liked this dish.  Especially the cheeks of the fish. As with most dishes the students would let me select from a dish first. When I went for the fish cheeks the students were astonished. They did not know that I knew where the best tasting meat was in a fish. However, I let my students decide who got the eyes.

Not quite The Whole Fish, but definitely more than you usually get in a Chinese restaurant in the US.

Duck, Pancakes, Plum Sauce, Greens, Chinese FoodThis was another nice dish. For this one you would take the pancake and spread some duck sauce on it. You would then add a piece of duck and the greens and fold it up. Similar to the way you would eat fajitas.

Brazier, Chinese Food, Meat and Veggies, Chinese Restaurant

Don’t really remember what was in this dish, but I know that it was one of the ones where I tried it before I knew what it was. I probably wouldn’t have tried it if I knew what it was. I did go back to this dish several times and take more though.

This is also an example of using a brazier to keep the food hot while it was being served.

Chicken, Greens, Chinese Food, Chinese Cuisine, Pudong

If I remember right this was a chicken dish. It had a very tasty broth and a little bit of a kick with the peppers.

One thing that I really liked is that most of the meals were served with greens. I definitely got a good dose of vitamins on the trip.

Which of these dishes would you try first?

Now off to bed to see if I can sleep. I have a long week ahead of me.
