Today I visited the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, Japan.
One of the main exhibits that I wanted to visit was the Giant Pandas. I have now seen Giant Pandas at three zoos. I have also seen them at the Toronto Zoo and the San Diego Zoo.
The Giant Pandas House is very close to the entrance of the Ueno Zoo, so it was the first exhibit that I visited. I really like the art work in the Giant Panda House sign.
There are two Giant Pandas at the Ueno Zoo. The female is Shin Shin and the male is Ri Ri. It is very common for Giant Pandas to have duplicated names. The two Giant Pandas have been at the Ueno Zoo for three years.
I am not sure which of these pictures is Shin Shin and which is Ri Ri. There were very few signs in English and I didn’t see one that said which one was in which pavilion.
The Giant Pandas also spent most of their time at the back of their habitat and they were walking around a lot. This made getting clear pictures difficult.
This picture was taken during my second visit to the Giant Pandas. I really like the relaxed style of this one while it is eating a bamboo snack.
I like this picture for the ears. The Giant Panda is also eating bamboo in this picture. It looks like it is just sitting against a stand of bamboo, but it had grabbed the branch from the ground and was eating away.
Finally on my third visit while on the way out of the zoo I was able to get a closer shot of one of the Giant Pandas.
All of these pictures were also taken through glass, so it was difficult to eliminate reflections. Not quite as nice as the habitat at Toronto where we could take pictures without obstruction.
I have a lot more pictures from the Ueno Zoo, and you will most likely see some of them soon.
Remember to check out my other Giant Panda posts:
Have you seen Giant Pandas?
Steven
Thanks for reminding me of going to see Chi Chi at London Zoo in the late 1960s. First and last time I ever saw a Panda.
No 😦
