When I was at the Toronto Zoo last month, one of the exhibits that I wanted to see was the butterfly exhibit in the Malayan Woods Pavilion. I remember from my first trip to the Toronto Zoo that there were many different butterflies on exhibit. I was disappointed as I only saw a few butterflies on this trip.

On this visit I mostly saw Paper Kite (Idea leuconoe) butterflies. The Paper Kite is a member of the Nymphalidae family.

Here is a Paper Kite perched on the underside of one of the feeders. You can see the very clear pattern of black and white.

The butterfly is not entirely black and white. You can see a slight yellow tinge to the wings. Because of their coloring they are also known as Rice Paper butterflies.

I really like the pattern of black on white on this butterfly. Especially the long black line down the body.

To close out the post here is a picture of a butterfly perched on a flower. The Paper Kite butterfly is mainly from Malaysia, but is also seen in other South-East Asian countries.

I really enjoy visiting a butterfly pavilion where I can get good pictures. Butterflies are so hard to capture in the great outdoors.
