Casa de Cultura

At lunch today we walked to the Coyoacan neighborhood of Santa Catarina.

Coyoacan Street - Coyoacan - Mexico City - Santa Catarina - Tree LIned Streets

On the way to Santa Catarina we walked through tree lined streets. The trees contrast with the beautiful colors of the buildings.

Old Volkswagen Beetle - Old Bug - VW Bug - Old cars - Santa Catarina - Mexico

When we got to the square in Santa Catarina, I couldn’t resist taking a picture of this old VW Beetle. You see these old cars all over the place, and in almost any color.

Seeing these old Bugs bring back memories of childhood when this was a popular car in the US. Of course my arm would often hurt from my sister yelling slug-bug when she would see one and then pounding my arm.

We then entered the courtyards of the Casa de Cultura Jesus Reyes Heroles. The Casa is in the Colonial style and was donated as a cultural center about 30 years ago. The courtyards contain several art galleries and a culinary arts school.

We had lunch at the little restaurant run by the culinary arts school.

The courtyards also have a lot of different sculptures, including this great sculpture of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. They are two of the most important Mexican artists of the 20th century. They both worked in the Coyoacan area. You can read more about them in my post: Artistic Thursday

The courtyards are extensive and in this picture you can see some of the open space. Rising above the walls of the Casa you can see the Capilla de Santa Catarina.

Even though this fountain was not running when I took the picture, it was very beautiful. I really like the blue tile in the bottom of the pool.

Capilla de Santa Catarina - Coyoacan - Old Church Building - Mexico City

As we headed back to the office I turned back and took this lopsided picture of the Capilla de Santa Catarina. You can see a better picture of the church building and more information about the church and neighborhood in my post: Santa Catarina

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into the culture of Mexico.
