No news this week about when Home Pride Bread will be returning to the shelves, but there was news about another former Hostess Brands product line.
There have been several news reports that Drake’s cakes will be returning to the shelves next month. The Drake’s brand was bought by McKee Foods who also distribute the Little Debbie products.
McKee Foods was named the Stalking Horse bidder for Drake’s back in January and the auction was held in March.
Drake’s cakes were only distributed in the Northeast and included Devil Dogs, Ring Dings and Yodels. Some of the Drake’s products are very similar to Little Debbie products, but will most likely be retained as they had a large following.
If I have ever eaten any Drake’s cakes it will have been long ago when I worked for a company based in Massachusetts. They are pretty much unheard of here in California except for their appearance on Seinfeld.
So, now on to the bread quest.
This week I have been trying out Nature’s Own 100% Whole Wheat distributed by Flowers Foods. One big distinction is that this is the 16 oz. size. The bread in this loaf is different in appearance to the full size loaf. This one has crushed wheat on the top of the loaf and the full size loaf does not. I will probably try the full size loaf next.
I was not impressed with this loaf of bread. However, I have to take into account that this is the bread that is WIC approved, so is lower in price and most likely a different recipe than the full size loaf. It did not have the texture and flavor of a premium bread.
That being said, it did not have a bad taste or texture it was just not what I was expecting based on the other Nature’s Own breads that I have tried.
It did toast well, but did not have the texture or taste that I like for a sandwich.
I am actually just tempted to buy a loaf of Nature’s Own Honey Wheat and call it the replacement. But what fun would that be.
As I mentioned in my last update post Products Appearing I bought a couple of Hostess Fruit Pies this week. The first one that I tried out was the Apple since it had been my favorite.
Here we see the pie with the familiar sugar glaze and shape. But, does it taste the same?
Yes, it had the familiar taste that I was used to growing up. Biting into this pie brought back a flood of memories.
Keep checking back for more Home Pride Updates as the former Hostess Brand products continue to reappear on the shelves.
Hopefully Home Pride Bread will join them soon.
