This week there was not much in the news about the future of the Hostess brands. We are simply in a waiting period before the upcoming auctions. The first one is not until February 28th and it will be the one that includes Home Pride Bread.
However, that doesn’t mean that my quest for a temporary replacement for Home Pride bread has ended.
This week I tried out Cascade Pride Split Top Wheat.
I picked this bread up at WinCo Foods last week. It looked promising as the packaging was similar 🙂 and the look of the bread through the clear portions of the packaging also looked similar.
The bread had a good taste, but the texture was not the same as Home Pride. It did not toast quite as good as some of the other breads I have tried and the color was also too light. I felt like I was eating white bread :-). If this was what was left on the shelf at the end of a busy shopping day at the grocery store, I would not be disappointed that I would have to use it for a week, but it would not be my first choice.
For those of you who may not be familiar with this brand, it is only distributed out here on the west coast.
This bread gets added to the list of breads that have not passed the test.
After this week the current front-runners are Oven Joy from Safeway, Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat and Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
The breads that have not passed the test are Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat , Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat, Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat, Sara Lee Honey Wheat, Bimbo Soft Wheat Family and Cascade Pride Split Top Wheat.
You can click on the bread names above to visit the posts where I reviewed them.
This week I decided to pick up an other loaf of bread from Oroweat.
This one looks a bit better than the previous Oroweat bread that I tried. This one is Oroweat simply 100% Whole Wheat.
This one is another nice big loaf and looks like it will have a better texture than the other Oroweat that I tried. Hopefully it tastes great :-).
Check back next week to find out how this bread fares against my tests.
Steven

I think I buy different bread every week too, only because I get tired of sandwiches from the same bread all the time. Sometimes it’s whole wheat, sometimes rye or pumpernickel. This week I’m working so I bought some bagels I found that are only 190 calories! woop woop!

I think it might be worth your while to try Oroweat 100% Wheat Soft Family loaf again, my hubby and I have been hanging in there with this brand although it was nothing like Home Pride. However, I just bought a new loaf and it looks like they adjusted their recipe; the slices are less dense, and much softer and larger for a nicer size sandwich. My hubby is loving it now because he feels that it is a good substitute for his beloved Home Pride!!
I will have to give it a try again once I finish some travels.
