Virtual Hike to Castle Rock, Kansas

The latest destination on my Virtual Hike was Castle Rock, Kansas. Since it is well off the beaten path it is not visited much so I am sure that not many of my readers have been there.

Castle Rock, Kansas, Ashland, Virtual HikeCastle Rock is not a town or city, but rather a limestone formation. I did not visit Castle Rock when I lived in Kansas, but was very near it once when we went to Quinter for a regional track meet.

Kansas Badlands, Castle Rock, Rock Formations, GeologyCastle Rock is in an area called the Castle Rock Badlands. There are many chalk and limestone formations in the area. It is very beautiful.

Kansas Badlands, Castle Rock, Rock Formations, GeologyAs I zoom in on Google Maps you can see more detail. You can also see the shadow being thrown by Castle Rock at the top of the picture.

Kansas Badlands, Castle Rock, Rock Formations, GeologyI decided to see what pictures were available in Google Maps Street View as the pictures I took were from 17 years ago and it has had a major change. This picture was taken back in 2013.

Castle Rock, Gove County, Quinter, Kansas, Rock formationYou can see here that Castle Rock looked very different back in March of 2000.

In 2001 the tallest spire lost the top part just after a summer thunderstorm.

Castle Rock - March 2000 - Gove County Kansas - Scenic KansasCastle Rock is usually listed as having a height of 70 feet today. However, while looking for the historic height of Castle Rock the tallest figure I could find was 75 feet, so it may not be that high.

The next stop on the Virtual Hike is not too far away from Castle Rock and is a stop that has family significance.

Have any of you been to Castle Rock?

Two Biggest Detours

In my years of travel I have had many detours, delays and changes of schedule. However, my two biggest detours have involved trips to one country. Today was the 17th anniversary of one of those detours and the other happened earlier this year.

September 11 itinerary, South Africa, San Francisco, Memories, September 11One of the biggest detours was the result of September 11. You can see in the picture above that my schedule was to fly from Cape Town, Africa to London and then on to San Francisco.

Heathrow Airport - British Air 747 - September 11, 2001 - 9/11The first flight was uneventful, but the second flight landed in Edmonton, Canada instead. I then flew back to London and stayed there a few days before eventually flying home to San Francisco.

You can read more about this trip in September 11 Memories and 17 Years Ago on September 11.

Zurich Airport, Swiss Lounge, Outdoor patioThe trip in 2001 to South Africa was my first trip there and I hadn’t been back until this year. I started my trip this year by flying to Zurich and then spent all day in the airport waiting for my flight.

As the flight time approached I made my way to the gate and found out that due to a passport issue I was unable to continue on to South Africa.

Not OK, Denied Boarding, South Africa, Passport IssueI retrieved my bag and waited until morning when I could get a flight back home to get a new passport.  See my post In the Wrong Place for more details.

Frankfurt Airport, South African Airways, Tail ArtLater that week I was again on my way to South Africa. I decided this time to steer clear of Zurich and connected in Frankfurt. Here you can see the tail of the South African plane.

A380, Airbus, Lufthansa, Frankfurt AirportFortunately the flight home (See: JNB to SFO) was uneventful.

It was definitely a coincidence that my two biggest detours have been on trips to South Africa. I am sure that if I visit there a third time that I will have a trip without detours.

If not, then something is definitely going on 🙂

Now for some sleep after an emotionally draining day. September 11 always brings back a lot of memories.
