Palindrome Day II

Did you know that today was a palindrome day?

palindrome day, dates, numbersToday’s date can be read the same forward and backwards. This is a full palindrome day as it is with the full year date format. M/D/YYYY

palindrome day, dates, numbersToday is also a short palindrome day when using just the last two digits of the year. M/D/YY

You should be able to quickly deduce that there will now be a string of short palindrome days. Tomorrow is 9/11/19 which is also the same forward and back.

palindrome day, dates, numbersSome people are calling this a palindrome week, but I disagree as the week starts on Sunday and not Tuesday. However, since we will have ten days in a row of palindrome dates this coming weekend will be a palindrome weekend.

So, when will the next palindrome day be?

palindrome day, dates, numbersFor February 2, 2020 to work we have to use the less common mm/dd/yyyy format. Here in the US we most often use the m/d/yyyy or m/d/yy format.

palindrome day, dates, numbersWe will also have a couple short date palindromes if we use the mm/dd/yy format.

james joyce, ulysses, palindrome, longest palindrome, tattarrattatOf course we usually think of words when we see the term palindrome. The longest palindrome in the English language is tattarrattat which was used by James Joyce in his novel Ulysses. Tattarrattat is the sound of a knock on a door.

palindrome phrase, a man a plan a canal panamaPalindromes can also be phrases like “A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!”

There are other weird facts I could share about palindromes, like the fact that even a novel of more than 50,000 words was written as a palindrome. However, I will stop the trivia here.

However, I will state that Ben Johnson created the word palindrome from the Greek words palin and dromos. The root word palin means again and dromos means way or direction. For those of you not up on your history of authors, Ben Johnson was a playwright from the early 1600’s so the word has been around for a long time.

Hmm, I guess my day was a bit like a palindrome.

sleep, eat, commute, work, eat, work, commute, eat, sleep

I did have some fun in the classroom two years ago when I wrote the original post. I asked one of the students what the date was and then wrote the date from right to left on the board.

Brady Bunch Memories II

This past week I have been thinking about The Brady Bunch.

The Brady Bunch, Wikipedia, Alice Nelson, Ann B. Davis

from Wikipedia

Over the past few days members of the cast have been on Food Network as judges of Chopped and have also appeared on Worst Cooks in America.

Of course, this was all as promotions for the new HGTV series that premiered this evening.

Tonight was the first episode of A Very Brady Renovation.

Brady Bunch House, Brady Rennovation, Sitcom, Brady BunchMany do not realize that the house was only used for exterior shots. The show was of course filmed in a studio.

A Very Brady Renovation is about turning the original house into what was seen on TV.

In the first episode tonight it showed how different the the house looked and what will be needed to turn it into the house from the TV show.

The living room and dining room were unveiled at the end of the first episode, and they did a very good job in replicating the spaces.

The actors who played the six kids are all on the show and helping figure things out to make sure that everything looks authentic.

There will be four more episodes, and I am looking forward to watching the transformation.Brady Bunch Years, Bobby Brady, Cindy BradyI always have enjoyed watching The Brady Bunch. Our family grew up without TV, but we would occasionally get to watch the show when visiting friends.

Now when I watch the show I have memories of growing up in the Brady years.

I could share pictures of my older sister dressed in outfits that Marcia and Jan would wear, but will be nice to her.

The picture above comes from one of my grade school class pictures. Here I am with my friend Cindy. Don’t we look like we could fill in for Bobby and Cindy on the show?

Brady Bunch, Bobby and Cindy, Celebrity Look AlikeHere is another picture of us together. Can you see why watching The Brady Bunch brings back memories?

Perhaps the reason that I look a bit like Bobby is that Michael Lookinland and I share some colonial ancestors. However you have to go back to the 1600’s for the connection so probably not.

Who was your favorite Brady?
