Recent Reads III

Tonight I will share a few of the recent books that I have read.

Native American, Algonguians, Indians, Ancestry, Family HistoryI recently read Algonquians of the East Coast which is part of the Time Life Books series on The Native Americans.

I checked this book out for two reasons. One reason is that some of my Amish ancestors were victims of a raid by the Delaware tribe at the Northkill Creek Amish settlement in 1757. The second reason is that about 40 years later members of the same tribe left a baby with my 5th Great Grandparents. She was raised among the Amish and was my 4th Great Grandmother.

I wanted to know more about the Algonquians as the Delaware or Leni Lenape are part of this larger grouping of Native Americans.

DAvid McCullough, The Wright Brothers, First Flight, Aviation, Kitty HawkI found this book at the library book sale. I have always enjoyed the writing of David McCullough, and when I saw The Wright Brothers on the shelf it just had to go home with me. It quickly made it to the top of my to-read pile and I really enjoyed this biography.

Cathleen Schine, The Grammarians, books, readingThe Grammarians by Cathleen Schine was found on the New Books shelf at the library.

The title was what caught my eye, but when I saw that it was about twins that had a secret language I decided to check it out.

This was an interesting book, and it was interesting to follow the twist and turns of the plot.

Trixie Belden, YA Series, MysteriesHere is another book challenge I have embarked on.

I really enjoyed reading the Trixie Belden mysteries when I was a kid. Most of the books that I have on my shelves are from the Whitman Deluxe Editions of which there were 15. I am going to restrict my challenge to just these first 15 titles.

The original author of the series was Julie Campbell and Trixie Belden and the Secret of the Mansion was the first title. I am currently reading the third book in the series.

Phantom Toolbooth, books, YA booksI am also rereading The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I decided that even though I was not done I would include it in this post 🙂

I also found this book at the library book sale. It brought back some good memories so I decided that I needed to take it home and read the story again.

Back to reading,

Steven

Worn Out Shoes

Today while working in the yard my mowing shoes finally wore out.

yard work shoes, mowing shoes, worn out shoes, dirty shoesI am really not sure how long I have used these shoes while working in my yard, but it may be more than 10 years. I only wear them a couple times a month.

I really don’t care what they look like. I just let them get dirtier and dirtier.

yard mowing, backyard, grass, yardworkI had finished mowing my backyard and had filled my yard waste bin with the tree limbs that I had cut down a couple weeks ago.

yard work, roses, pruning, praying mantisI then set to work on cleaning up my rose bushes. While trimming the rose bushes I ran across this praying mantis. I eventually had to shoo him away as I needed to cut off the rose he was perched on.

yard work shoes, mowing shoes, worn out shoes, dirty shoesPart of the sole of the shoe had come detached. I guess that I could glue it back in place.

However, I have plenty of other old shoes that I could turn into mowing shoes. I will just have to find the right ones that are easy to slip on and off and will look really cool when they get dirty.
