Singapore Gardens

Back in 2016 I visited the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

I am thinking about that visit tonight as they were the setting for parts of a show I have been watching. They were mainly used just as a beautiful background for several scenes and also because an orchid was a central part of the plot. Perhaps also to show that the scenes were taking place in Singapore as they are a popular tourist destination.

So, I will share what I wrote back then, with a few changes in content and readability.

Gardens by the BaySingapore Flyer, Singapore River, Reflections, RipplesBefore we visited the gardens we stopped at a nearby park. I really like this image that I captured of the Singapore Flyer and the skyline reflected in the Singapore River. The ripples in the water also caught my eye.

Singapore, Sands Casino, Sands Hotel, Futuristic BuildingHere we can see the Gardens by the Bay in front of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. This is the futuristic looking building that I can see from my Hotel Room, but from the opposite side. My sister stayed at this hotel when she visited Singapore.

Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore, Yellow FlowersThe key feature of the Gardens by the Bay are two large domes that enclose a garden and a forest.

The Flower Dome has multiple levels of flower displays. I took hundreds of pictures as you would expect and will share just a few in this post.

Sometimes it is the tiny things that catch my attention like the little yellow flowers shown above.

Tulip Mania, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore, Cooled Conservatories, TulipsToday was the last day of Tulipmania Rediscovered at the Flower Dome so I had to get some pictures of the beautiful tulips.

Cloud Forest, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore, WaterfallsThe Cloud Forest dome has a really nice set of waterfalls. The dome encloses a rain forest that is also filled with flowers. Rain Forest, Flowers, Cloud Forest, Gardens by the Bay, SingaporeHere are some of the beautiful little flowers that you see in a rain forest.

Lego Flowers, Singapore, Gardens by the Bay, Cloud Forest, Lego FlowersCan you tell what some of these flowers are made from?

I am not sure why they had this little section of flowers made from Legos, but perhaps it is because these flowers are difficult to maintain and have limited time when they are at their peak. In any case it was very interesting to see flowers made from Legos.

More flower pictures are now tucked away in my files and may be seen in the future. It depends on where my mind wanders 🙂

Virtual Hike to Caratunk, Maine

The next destination on my Virtual Hike was Caratunk, Maine.

The previous destination on my virtual hike was Kokadjo, Maine.kokadjo maine, caratunk, maine, virtual hike, hiking, roads, google mapsThe virtual hike from  Kokajo to Caratunk was through the wilderness of Northern Maine. You can see from the terrain map that it passed by Moosehead Lake and other bodies of water.

If I would have followed the gray route I would have ended up hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail. There is also a ferry specifically for the Appalachian train just north of Caratunk.

kokadjuomaine, caratunk, maine, virtual hike, hiking, roads, google mapsThe roads in this segment were a bit better, but still a mix of dirt roads and blacktop. However, a much lower ratio of dirt roads and trails.

kokadjo maine, caratunk, maine, virtual hike, hiking, roads, google mapsThere were also more stretches of road with small streams or rivers that were close to the road. As in recent segments the roads were mostly lined with trees.

kokadjo maine, caratunk, maine, virtual hike, hiking, roads, google mapsAs I got close to Caratunk I virtually passed by Pleasant Pond. The pond is surrounded by many cabins and homes and is known for sport fishing.

kokadjo maine, caratunk, maine, virtual hike, hiking, roads, google mapsI finally reached Caratunk which is a very small town. The population in the last census was only 81.

I have been setting shorter distances between destinations for better motivation for my daily walking and so far it has been working. I have been walking more each day and have made good progress toward New Hampshire.

My current plan is to finish making my way across Maine, and then across New Hampshire and Vermont to New York. Perhaps I will find some interesting stops along the way.
