2018 Resolutions

I am just back from a walk and have been thinking of some of my resolutions or goals for 2018. Most are just general without a definitive goal, but I thought I would share some of them.

Virtual Hike, Yosemite, Long walk, exerciseOne of them is to continue my Virtual Hike. It started out as just a Virtual Hike to Yosemite, but I then continued on and am now in southern Utah almost to The Four Corners Monument.

I am not sure where I want to be by the end of 2018 as I don’t know what route I will take and what places I will visit. I do have the next couple spots identified as I will stop by the Boy Scout camp I went to in Colorado and the town where I went to High School in Kansas. Beyond there the route is not yet clear.

Salmon, Bistro, Come a Casa, MilanOf course, the Virtual Hike is incentive to exercise and has contributed to some weight loss. I do want to lose more weight in 2018 as I try to get into better shape. I know that to do this that I need to add some diet changes in as well.

Perhaps eat more fish and vegetables. This plate of salmon and veggies that I had in Milan looks good.

I also need to not eat as much cafeteria food at work. Perhaps taking my lunch to work more often will be in my changes.

I do have a few goals in mind for weight loss, but won’t share any thing specific.

Books Read, Goodreads, GoalsOf course, I have some reading goals as well, but I have not set my goal for the year even close to what I have read in the past few years. I need to read a little less and spend more time doing other things like spending more time with friends.

The complete Professor Challenger Stories, Arthur Conan DoyleI do have a few reading challenges, like The Professor Challenger Challenge, that I am working on and as always plan on trying to read the Pulitzer winner for Fiction before it gets announced. I will also read the Newbery Award winners when they are announced soon.

Cooking Spoon Holder, Mason Jar, World Market, ceramicI plan to be more giving. Looking back over 2017 I found that I have given more gifts than I have in many years. I need to keep this up. The item above was given as thanks to a friend whose cooking I often enjoy. I have given her several Mason items in the past couple of years.

I have also been named to the Board of Directors for a local charity that provides funding for library and literacy programs. I decided that it was important to give more back to the community and so volunteered some of my time. You may see more on this later as I get more involved.

Shephelah, Lachish, Archaeological Dig, Full MoonI do not yet have a big vacation planned for this year, but am thinking about a trip to Jordan in 2019. I do know that I will go to Germany and Canada this year for work, but not sure where else. We have launched a new product that will keep me very busy and may take me to some places I haven’t been to for awhile.

I would like to go somewhere I haven’t been before. That may be just a trip to one of the US States I haven’t been to or perhaps just somewhere in California I haven’t been to.

Cracker Barrel, Old Country Store, St. Joseph, Missouri, Food FixOne more resolution. Eat at Cracker Barrel in California!

This is the year that Cracker Barrel opens here. I probably won’t take a road trip down to Victorville in February, but will most likely head up to Sacramento when one opens there. The first one in the Sacramento area will be on Howe Avenue in Arden-Arcade and there is also a project under discussion in Rocklin.

Hmm, a close Cracker Barrel may not be good for a diet.

I have some other resolutions, but some of them are a bit personal and I will keep them to myself 🙂

I am hoping that 2018 will be a great year and one that is full of wisdom for me. I hope to make some good decisions this year so need a bit of wisdom 🙂

I wish all my readers a great 2018.

Last Day of 2017

Today is the last day of 2017 and I have been reflecting on the events of the year as I was out walking this evening.

New Year, Stockton Record, Headlines, NewspaperWhen I arrived back home I noticed that I had a newspaper in my driveway. It had not been there when I left, and I wondered what it was. I picked up the paper and it was the newspaper for January 1, 2018.

Had I taken a really long overnight walk? Had I fell and knocked myself out and started walking again without noticing?

No, they must of just produced the paper early so that everyone would have the night off to celebrate instead of putting out a newspaper.

I am now thinking, should I read the paper now or wait until the morning?

Bacon Wrapped Little Smokies - Mini Hot dogs - Bacon Wrapped - Bacon Goodness - Finger FoodI am actually at home this evening instead of being at a party eating Finger Foods and ringing in the New Year.

There has been a flu bug going around with my friends in Patterson and I decided that since I am scheduled to fly to Germany on Wednesday that I wasn’t going to risk catching a bug.

Walking Distance, New Year, Long WalksI took a long walk this evening as I have been for the last week or so. I did have two days with only short walks, but overall good progress on my Virtual Hike.

I started my Virtual Hikes on July 1st and since then I have walked over 840 miles. I am also down 26 pounds and am at my lowest weight in the last 6 years.

Books Read, Goodreads, GoalsI just checked my final stats on Goodreads and I read 216 books which is the same as last year and down from previous years. I am not sure yet what my goal will be for next year.

Books Read, Pages Read, Goodreads, Book ChallengesI did read more pages this year than I did last year. This is partly because one of my challenges last year was to read all the Happy Hollisters books that were not very long, and the year before I was still working on my Newbery Challenge.

Goodreads, book stats, genre, TrollopeThis year I have been focusing more on the 1001 Books list. I have also been reading through the Redwall series, but they are much longer books. I also completed a Sherlock Holmes Challenge. After reading all the Sherlock books by Doyle I decided it was also time for a Professor Challenger Challenge.

I also found it interesting that the longest book that I read for the year was The Prime Minister by Anthony Trollope. I decided to look back at previous years to see what the longest book was and it was surprising.

  • 2017 The Prime Minister by Anthony Trollope
  • 2016 The Last Chronicle of Barset by Anthony Trollope
  • 2015 Castle Richmond by Anthony Trollope
  • 2014 A Dream of Red Mansions by Cao Xueqin
  • 2013 Clarissa by Samuel Richmond
  • 2012 Cecilia by Fanny Burney
  • 2011 The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu
  • 2010 Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

For the last three years the longest book has been by Anthony Trollope. Perhaps I need to read another long Trollope next year. I do have a few sitting on one of my to read shelves.

Should I try and finish another book before midnight or just wait for next year 🙂

Now to start finalizing some of my resolutions.

Happy New Year!

Steven
