Cottage Pie

While in South Africa I was blessed to have a couple homemade meals. On Tuesday after work one of my students dropped me by my friends so I could go to Bible study with them.

Cottage Pie, South Africa, Herderspastei, Shepherds PieOf course, we needed to have some dinner and I was treated to some South African comfort food. My friend Candice, who was only a little girl when I last visited South Africa, cooked two cottage pies for dinner.

Cottage Pie, South Africa, Herderspastei, Shepherds PieShe made two types of cottage pie. One was very traditional and the other had the addition of pumpkin.

Cottage Pie, South Africa, Herderspastei, Shepherds PieYou can see here that cottage pie is very similar to shepherd’s pie, and it is really all in the name. Of course, there are many different variations of exactly what is in a cottage or shepherd’s pie. However, the unifying theme is minced meat and vegetables topped with mashed potatoes and cheese.

Cottage Pie, South Africa, Herderspastei, Shepherds PieThe Afrikaans word for this dish is herderspastei, which would translate to shepherd’s pie.

The addition of the pumpkin made for a nice sweet taste to the cottage pie and I really enjoyed it. They were both so delicious that I just had to have seconds.

I also tried to be a little bit healthy and had some salad 🙂

It was a wonderful evening spent together talking about many different things and just enjoying our time together.

It is wonderful to have friends around the world that I can visit when I travel.

Throwback Thursday 18 Years Ago

Tonight I am very tired. It has been an exhausting week so far and I am glad that tomorrow is Friday. I fell asleep watching the replay of the Tour de France and have just a little time to put together a post. So here is a Thursday Throwback to 18 years ago.

Doorways, Fort Point, San Francisco ,ThrowbackHere is a picture that caught my eye while looking through some old pictures from a trip to San Francisco years ago. At the time I still lived in Kansas City and would travel out here to California to teach classes. On Saturdays I would usually go sightseeing with my students.

I took the picture above at Fort Point which is below the Golden Gate Bridge. I have always liked this view down through the doorways of the barracks at the fort.

Golden Gate, 2000, 18 years ago, disk cameraAll the pictures in this post were taken with an old Sony digital camera that saved the pictures on floppy disks. Therefore the resolution is not so good.

The first picture was taken at Fort Point which is seen at the far right of this picture underneath the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge.

In the background you can see an indistinct view of the San Francisco skyline which has changed quite a bit since that time.

Alcatraz, Golden Gate, Marin HeadlandsHere is a less popular view of Alcatraz. Most pictures you see are taken from the wharf area of San Francisco. This one is taken from the Marin Headlands. In the far distance you see the old Bay Bridge which has since been replaced.
