Ioway

Today I ran across an official document with the address for someone listed as Ioway. I have of course heard people say Ioway, but don’t recall seeing it in print.

There is a tribe of Native Americans known as the Ioway and Iowa’s name was derived from them.

This was an old document as it was a draft registration card from WWI.

william Isaac Braman, Blanchard, Ioway, Iowa, draft card, WWIThe registration card was for my Great-Granduncle William Isaac Braman.

william Isaac Braman, Blanchard, Ioway, Iowa, draft card, WWIAt the time he was working as a miner in Bruceville, Indiana which is in Knox County near Vincennes.

The card shows his nearest relative. I first read it as Klara Braman, which was also how it was transcribed in the record. I though this made sense as he was married to a Clarice. However, he did not get married until 1924 which was about seven years after this draft card was filled out. Looking closer I then figured out it was his mother Flora D. Braman.

border town, blanchard, iowa, Missouri, Page CountyIt was also interesting to see that the address was Blanchard, Ioway. My Great, Great Grandmother lived just south of Blanchard in Missouri.

william Isaac Braman, Blanchard, Ioway, Iowa, draft card, WWIThe card also showed that my Dad’s Great Uncle Bill was medium height, was stout and had blue eyes and black or brown hair.

william Isaac Braman, Blanchard, Ioway, Iowa, draft card, WWII did find a picture of Uncle Bill, so I snipped his image out of the group of people to share with you.

It was interesting to see this draft card and to learn a bit more about Uncle Bill. He must have gone to Indiana for the mining job. He did bring something home to Iowa/Missouri when he was finished working as Clarice was from Vincennes.

    Steven ,

Flora Braman who was she married to ?

Definitely can see my Grandpa Elmer Braman , my Dad Larry and my brother Larry when looking at Great Uncle Bill’s picture. Plus my other siblings and cousins, niece and nephews as we all seem to have the Braman eyes and forehead .

    Thanks for sharing interesting information.
