The next destination on my Virtual Hike was New Milford, Connecticut where my Rowe and Murray ancestors lived in the early 1800’s.
This segment of the Virtual Hike started in Braman Corners, New York where my Braman ancestors lived in the early 1800’s.
The route goes through the hills down to the Hudson River Valley and up the hills on the other side. I like this terrain map feature with Google Maps. It really shows the ups and down of the route.
For this route I had to take a virtual ferry across the Hudson River to get from Athens to Hudson.
From Google Street View I was able to capture a picture of the ferry and the Hudson side of the river.
New Milford is in Litchfield County, Connecticut and borders New York.
William Rowe, my 4th great grandfather, was from New York, but had come to New Milford where he married Elizabeth Murray in about 1813. My 3rd great grandfather Jeremiah Rowe was born there in 1814.
The Murray family had been in the New Milford area for several generations.
My Rowe family moved away from New Milford in the 1830’s and you may have met them in early points on my Virtual Hike.
The Rowe/Row family eventually ended up in Iowa. See: A Virtual Hike Idea
Someday I need to visit the New Milford Historical Society.
New Milford has some interesting early history.
The earliest settler in New Milford was John Noble and his daughter Sarah who went there in 1707 from Westerfield, Massachusetts. I have an interesting family connection with them also.
There is a Newbery book about the adventures of Sarah.
The Courage of Sarah Noble is by Alice Dalgliesh, and a long time ago I wrote a post about the book. Click on the link above to find out more.
I am still a little behind on documenting my Virtual Hike. I actually made it to New Milford back in late July. However, starting in March the distance I have walked each day has been much less. I am working on a plan to reach a historically significant place on November 21.
The next stop is in Rhode Island at a place connected to a famous ancestor.
Now to go walk a bit so I can virtually make it to my destination by November 21.

I drove through that town last week.
I need to physically get there sometime and do some research 🙂
For sure!
