Last night in Jena I went to the city center to the Jenaer Altstadtfest.
Altstadt in Germany refers to the old section of a city. This could be the original walled section of a town, or just where the oldest area was located.
I had planned on getting into the city center before dark, but several things slowed me down including packing, another short picture taking jaunt and a mishap with the street train. The street train that I was riding on hit a bicycle. Fortunately the rider was OK after he tried to beat the train.
The market square of Jena was filled with food and drink vendors and also had a large stage with a band playing. The square was crowded as the main band was about to play. I had thought about just eating festival food, but instead ate at one of my favorite restaurants along the square and listened to the music. I didn’t need to see the band and I didn’t want to stand in a crowd eating my dinner.
In the background of this picture you can see the Jena city museum. I really like the look of this half-timbered building.
The main downtown parking lot in Jena was full of carnival rides. Here young people are getting ready to ride one of the rides. This was one ride I definitely did not want to get on after a full meal. I stood and watched the ride for a while before I got dizzy even watching.
I liked the turning colors of the large Ferris wheel that was at the carnival.
After wandering through the carnival I stopped by an area of games and snacks and then headed off to catch the street train for my hotel.
I am writing this as I get ready to head to the train to the airport. A long day of travel is just beginning.
