Louisa May Alcott

This evening I have been reading a biography of Louisa May Alcott.

Lousia May Alcott, Susan Cheever, Concord Massachusetts, A Personal BiographyThe book is Louisa May Alcott: A Personal Biography by Susan Cheever.

I have the book checked out from the library, so I obscured the labels that were on the cover. Hopefully it doesn’t take too much away from a beautiful cover.

I am really enjoying this book as it has been discussing the environment that Louisa grew up in while living in Concord, Massachusetts.

I am only halfway through the book, but have already learned about many important people who have connections to Concord.

Of course Walden Pond and Henry David Thoreau are mentioned as Thoreau was a good friend to the Alcott family. Ralph Waldo Emerson was also a good friend of the family and often helped them out in difficult times.

Authors Card Game - Louis May Alcott - Whitman - Anne Wales Abbott - Little WomenIt is very interesting that several of the authors in the Authors Card Game have ties to Concord.

The biography also covers some of the people who were associated with her father Bronson Alcott in the education field. The Peabody sisters, Horace Mann and Margaret Fuller are all mentioned as having an influence on Louisa.

The Alcotts were also abolitionists and a visit by John Brown to Concord is mentioned.

I am looking forward to the next chapter as it covers the time that Louisa spent as a nurse during the Civil War.

I have enjoyed learning more about Louisa May Alcott and am looking forward to my next trip to Massachusetts as I will most likely try and visit Concord. However, I am not sure when that will be. Maybe I just need to take a little vacation and go. I also have places in Rhode Island that I want to visit.

It is not often that I will write about a book that I am in the middle of reading, but it is definitely where my mind is wandering tonight and I wanted to put down some of my thoughts.

What is your favorite book by Louisa May Alcott?

  1. My kids and I spent time in Concord last summer. There is so much to do in the area. We also went to Orchard House. 🙂
