Saturday Book Acquisitions II

Today I visited a used book store in Manteca. I had gone to Manteca to go to Bass Pro Shops and buy some items for my upcoming trip to Turkey.

This post is similar to my Saturday Book Acquisitions post, so it gets a II designation.

Wagons West Series - Dana Fuller Ross - Independence! - Oklahoma! - Book SeriesOne of my acquisitions was two volumes of the 24 book Wagons West series by Dana Fuller Ross. I was only missing these two volumes to complete my set. I guess I need to start reading the series soon.

Companion Library - Gulliver's Travels - Treasure Island - Robinson Crusoe - Swiss Family RobinsonI also found two books from the Companion Library that I didn’t have. The top book is Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The bottom book is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss. These are definitely the adventure books in the series.

There are 18 volumes in the Companion Library series and I now have all but three of them. I am missing Five Little Peppers/Alice in Wonderland, The Little Lame Prince/The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and Tanglewood Tales/The Wind in the Willows.

I have good memories of reading some of the stories in the volumes of the Companion Library that we had while growing up.

The Beech Tree - Johnny Jack and His Beginnings - Pearl Buck - Children's StoriesI also found a couple of Pearl Buck books that I didn’t have. One of them had two children’s stories: The Beech Tree and Johnny Jack and His Beginnings. Pearl Buck is know for her writings about life in China, but she also wrote other styles of books as well.

For another Pearl Buck children’s book see: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

Death in the Castle - Pearl Buck - Pearl S. Buck - PaperbackI also found a paperback copy of Death in the Castle by Pearl Buck which is a suspense novel.  I now have copies of about 2/3 of the books that Pearl Buck wrote. I still need about 15 more.

L.M. Montgomery - Anne of Green Gables - Anne of the Island - Anne's House of Dreams - Further Chronicles of AvonleaI also found some old L. M. Montgomery hardback books. These are from the 20’s and 30’s. Of course, now I will have to watch out for some of the other volumes to build a matching set of Anne of Green Gables books.

Anne of Green Gables - Paperback books - Anne Series - L. M. MontgomeryWay back in the first couple of weeks of my blog I wrote a post about Anne of Green Gables. In it I showed a picture of the book shelf where I have my Anne of Green Gables series in paperback. You will notice that this current shot of the bookshelf is a little different. I have been trying to get a set with matching spines. I am beginning to wonder if the last two volumes in the series were ever available in the same format as the first six.

Unfortunately I was unable to find any Happy Hollisters books at the used book store. I am still looking for 2 of the 33 books in the series; The Happy Hollisters at Sea Gull Beach and The Happy Hollisters and the Ice Carnival Mystery.

Sorry, the pictures are not the best quality and I my mind is wandering in other directions as I wrote this. When I got home this afternoon I discovered that I have a leaky water heater. The water that is leaking is cold, so it is from the source side. I have turned the water to the heater off for now and will hopefully be able to get it repaired on Monday. I will turn it on temporarily in the morning 🙂

  1. I think there was another Anne book. It was all short stories. I had all of them too, but recently donated them all to my daughter’s school.

  4. Hello 🙂 I just thought I would leave a link for two of the Companion Library books that you say you were missing. Books: Five Little Peppers/Alice in Wonderland and Little Lame Prince/Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. They have pretty good deals for them. 🙂

Thanks for the link. However, I have a little rule for most of what I am looking for. I need to try and find it in person not just hunt it down on the internet. Part of the fun of collecting is in finding what you are looking for.
