In the BAR III

When I got home from my trip to Australia, one of the items in my box of mail was the new issue of Biblical Archaeology Review (BAR).

I am also thinking about Archaeology tonight as my friend Barry posted about treasure that was recently found at a dig site: Treasure Found at Abel Beth-Maacah

I also wrote a post back in 2012 about the site when they reported the results of a short assessment dig: Tel-Abel

Now back to what is in the BAR. You can read the two previous posts by clicking on the following links:

In the BAR II

In the previous issues there were several articles about places that I had been, but in the new issue the articles are mainly about places I haven’t been to.

The feature articles are about the hometown of the Maccabees, brick making by the Israelites in Egypt, Mount Sinai and real people mentioned in the Bible.

I am going to concentrate on the article titled: Archaeology Confirms 50 Real People in the Bible.

I have seen several of the artifacts that are mentioned in the article.

Tiglath Pileser III - British Museum - Pul - First watch?I took this picture at the British Museum in London.

Here we have Tiglath-Pilser III of Assyria. He is mentioned in 2 Kings 15:29.

I wrote more about him in my post: First Watch?

Does it look like he is wearing a watch?

Tel Dan - Laish - Judges 18 - David InscriptionThe next artifact was found at Tel Dan.

House of David Inscription - Tel Dan - Israel Museum - Real People in the BibleThis inscription from the 9th Century B.C. mentions the king of Israel and the “House of David.”

I took this picture at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. You can read more about the day I visited the Israel Museum in my post Unfolding History.

Cuneiform Prism - Israel Museum - Assyrian King Sennacherib - Hezekiah - JerusalemIn the Israel Museum I also took a picture of the cuneiform cylinder where King Sennacherib of Assyria claims that he destroyed 46 cities in Judah and had shut up Hezekiah in Jerusalem “like a bird in a cage.”

You can read more about Sennacherib’s military campaign in II Chronicles 32.

The article covers 50 people from about 1000 to 400 B.C. (David to Darius II).

Definitely an article that I plan on studying in more detail and following up on some of the references.

Now for some reading to try and put myself to sleep, definitely not the BAR as it is too interesting.

Jet lag is keeping me up. It feels like it is only early evening.
