Tonight while looking for something else, I wandered across a trio of post cards from the 1940’s.
The post cards are all sent from my Great-Great Uncle Elmer and his wife Kate to my Great-Great Grandmother Della Braman.
The first two cards are from August 1946 when they took a trip to the East Coast.
The first card is from early in the trip as they were just across the border from Iowa in Moline, Illinois. The card was sent from Normandy, Illinois which was a little further down the road.
They most likely spent the night in Normandy, as they stated that they were just ready to start on to Chicago and had been in Moline the day before.
The post card is really nice as it shows a beautiful church building.
This card was sent from Asbury Park, New Jersey a week later.
They were sending the card to let his mother know that they were starting for home. They had taken off their shoes and waded in the ocean.
I looked up Asbury Park and found that it was a popular Jersey Shore resort until the 1950’s. The construction of the Garden State Parkway shifted traffic and development away from the seashore.
In the card above the boardwalk was teeming with life. I am sure that the casino was very busy.
The third card is from 1949 when they took a trip in the opposite direction.
This colorful card was sent from Alberton, Montana. Alberton is a small town on the Idaho border. They probably bought this card a few days earlier before making the long trek across Montana.
They stated on the card that they were staying in a nice warm cabin that night, which was good because it was raining. They had also gone through a cave the day before. No mention was made of Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills of South Dakota, but maybe they had sent an earlier card.
Even though you can barely make out the Mt. Rushmore Memorial in the picture, it is a very interesting card. I really like the acres of forest land and the rustic bridge. I can just imagine driving through this area.
I have not been to either Mt. Rushmore or Montana, but they are on my list of places to visit someday.
My Great Aunt Kate loved to travel and in her later years visited several other countries, but that is a different story.
Which post card do you like the best?
Steven

Oh, I love the 40’s. I bet they were listening to great music while they traveled too. I love the cars of the day and the fashions. I’ve never been to Mount Rushmore but I’m amazed at the fact that it’s carved into a mountain side. Have you ever been to Lucerne Switzerland? There’s a Lion carved into the side of a mountain, he’s injured and it’s very very moving. I believe it’s a tribute to the Swiss Guard.
