Slug Bugs

Did you ever play Slug Bug or Punch Buggy when you were a kid?

Today when I see a classic VW Beetle I always think of my arm being sore from my big sister punching me.

During my recent trip to Mexico City I saw many classic Beetles, but that is not surprising as they didn’t stop production of the classic Beetle in Mexico until 2003.

You may not want to look at this post if you big sister is sitting next to you. You may get a sore arm from all the punches.

In Mexico City, you see Beetles of many different colors, but since Mexico is a country full of bright colors, they fit right in.

This one needs a little work. It looks like it hit a blue car. If you look closely you can also see a Ferrari badge on the side of the car. Or, at least it looks like one 🙂

You see many bugs in different states of repair. This one looks like it is ready for a paint job and also a new rear bumper.

Here is another that looks like it needs a new paint job. Is it a white bug or a light blue one? I wonder what color it will be painted.

I didn’t see any wild outlandish paint jobs on the Beetles near the office, but Mexico City is known for them and I saw them in other places. I might even have some pictures tucked away somewhere.

I also didn’t have any pictures of Beetle taxis from this trip, although they are still around and I did see some.

If you don’t like the bright colors, here is a dark gray Beetle for you. You also see an old VW van. You see a lot of these in Mexico City also. I am sure that the American Pickers would have a great time exploring Mexico City looking for VW vans.

Then there are the Beetles that have been converted into mini panel trucks or mini food trucks.

Would you call this a food bug?

I took the picture at long range across a dark and rainy intersection so it is hard to see the detail. Would you buy your tamales here?

I hope your arm is not sore.

  1. My family didn’t play it, and I can still remember the shock of riding with friends and being attacked for the first time to cries of “Slug Bug!” I remember being a wet blanket, making the kids feel guilty for accosting an “innocent.”

I’m so adoring all those Bugs, I do remember the game too. I’ve always wanted one of those camper ones. You just never see them around here much. Alys had one when she was younger, so did her sister.

Love these!!! We always played slug bug or actually we said “pinch a bug.” We never had one, but had a friend who had 5, one for him and one for each of his 4 sons. Thanks for the memories!
