Vintage Post Cards

Tonight my mind has wandered to Vintage Post Cards.

It is partly because of my post earlier this week on Stamp Collecting. While retrieving my stamp collection from the closet I ran across a box of post cards. It was a mix of post cards that I have acquired in my travels, and also some old vintage ones that were sent to my Great Grandparents.

Vintage Post Card - Greeting Card - Early 1900's - Writing SuppliesI really like this one. Especially as it has a great illustration of writing supplies and a nice poem.

Here’s plenty of Paper and Envelopes too,

Pen and ink as you plainly can see,

all things for your use-

So you’ve now no excuse,

For not writing a letter to me.

The post card above was sent to my Great Grandfather in 1910 by his niece Flora. He lived in Millersburg, Iowa and she lived far away in Mendon, Missouri.

Vintage Post Card - American Beauty Rose - Artistic Rose - Classic Post Card

This post card was also given to my Great Grandfather by his niece Flora. It does not have a postmark or any text, so may have been sent along with a letter or given to him in person. Many of you know how I love roses, so this one is really special. It is indeed an American Beauty.

The last card comes from my Amish branch of the family. I will start with the post mark and stamp.

Old Postmark - Old Postage Stamp - Arthur, Illinois - 1909 Postmark - Vintage Post Card

The card was sent from Arthur, Illinois to Kalona, Iowa in 1909. I really like this old postmark and postage stamp. A great Benjamin Franklin stamp.

What cracks me up is the subject of the post card.

1909 Post Card - Vintage Post Card - Vintage Roadster - Post Card

This post card was sent to my Amish Great Grandmother by one of her Amish cousins. Of course this was in the early days of automobiles. The first Model T was produced almost exactly one year before this card was sent. I am not sure what model this roadster is on the post card. Perhaps one of my readers who knows more about automobiles will know and leave a comment.

I do like the little poem on the post card.

We pass the birds on flashing wing,

And leave them far behind us,

We rush along with merry song,

‘Twill puzzle you to find us.

If you ran across this post card would it make you think about the Amish? Would you expect a horse and buggy instead?

I believe that like many Americans of that time the Amish were also fascinated by the automobile. It would have only been later that restrictions would have been put in place on owning automobiles.

Which of these post cards do you like the best? Do they bring back any memories?

Steven

Steven, 2 of your cards didn’t come through. Just about a 1/2 inch shows. I’ve noticed that this happens everyday since you got the new format

Glenda, I have not seen any problem with any of my devices or browsers that I look at the site with. I use i-phone, i-pad, Firefox and Internet Explorer and always see the full pictures. What are you using to view the posts?

Is anybody else having troubles seeing pictures? Let me know if you do.

No problems with the images here. I’m using Firefox (v 21.0) on Win7, even running the NoScript add-on. Also, I tried Googling the car in your last image…couldn’t find an exact match, but had too much fun browsing through lots of neat old cars. ๐Ÿ™‚
