There was plenty of news about Twinkies and the new Hostess Brands LCC company this week, but no news about Flowers Foods and Home Pride Bread.
Last week I mentioned that Flowers Foods was starting to expand their distribution. Last Sunday I was in a grocery store about 25 miles south of me and saw a new variety of Rainbo bread that I hadn’t seen before. I decided to look for it here, but despite visiting four different grocery stores, including one from the same chain where I saw it before it was not to be found. Evidently we were not included in the southern portion of the Central Valley where Flowers Foods had started distribution in April.
Today I visited the same grocery store and picked up a loaf of the new variety. When I was checking out the cashier told me that it had come from Flowers Foods. Hopefully, the same bread will be available here within the next month as Flowers Foods expands their distribution to the northern Central Valley. This bread may be the temporary replacement for Home Pride Bread.
This week I have been trying out Rainbo White Bread.
Rainbo White Bread is distributed by Sara Lee/Grupo Bimbo but should be changing to Flowers Foods by the end of May.
This is one of the best tasting white breads that I have ever had. I really like the way that it toasts. I probably should have included Large in the name of the bread. It has slightly thicker slices, so is a bit softer when it is toasted. I also found out that Rainbo has a thin slice version of their white bread.
The texture of the bread is good and it makes good sandwiches. After the second week in a row with Rainbo bread, I am definitely feeling good about this brand of bread.
Since I am definitely looking for a wheat bread, and not a white bread. I am relegating this to the list of those that have not passed the test. However, it will do in a pinch.
The front runners are now Rainbo Wheat Bread , Roman Meal Sungrain 100% Whole Wheat and Roman Meal Thin Sliced Sandwich Bread.
The breads that have not passed the test are Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat , Safeway’s Butter Top Wheat, Oroweat Soft Family 100% Whole Wheat, Oven Joy, Sara Lee Honey Wheat, Bimbo Soft Wheat Family, Cascade Pride Split Top Wheat , Oroweat simply 100% Whole Wheat, Open Nature 100% Whole Wheat Bread and Rainbo White Bread.
You can click on the bread names above to visit the posts where I reviewed them.
Now to reveal the bread that I mentioned above. This one shows promise as the temporary replacement for Home Pride Wheat bread. Today I picked up a loaf of Rainbo Butter Top Wheat at the Save Mart in Patterson.
This loaf of bread has the look and feel of Home Pride Wheat. I have not yet opened it up and tried it, but will be as soon as I finish my current loaf of bread. Since I have liked the other Rainbo breads, this one has good potential.
Hopefully more details about Home Pride Bread will be released soon.

I have been eating Rainbo white bread for a couple of weeks. It is the best out here right now…………while we wait.
Wow! Thank you for the updates on Home Pride bread. I really miss the wheat bread, as well as a good honey wheat (can’t remember the brand, but possibly another Hostess sub-brand). I thought I was being OCD by Googling for the status! 😀 Also, noticed on your About page that you traveled to Antarctica, very cool, as I spent two winters (years) on the ice myself!
I was actually writing a post that include a few pictures from Antarctica when I received notification of your comment. What a coincidence :-).
Ha! Coincidence for sure! Sounds intriguing, I need to explore this blog, looks like a nice variety of subjects. Looking forward to the pictures.

Just thought I’d post an update here…my local Safeway *finally* has Home Pride butter top wheat (and white) bread! yay! It’s been years, so I’m happy.
Glad that they finally have it for you. Flowers Foods has definitely been expanding their presence in the West.
