Colorful Coyoacan Trees

The trees in Coyoacan are very beautiful in the spring. Almost everywhere you look there are flowering trees. Two of the species are very nice to look at, especially as I rarely see them.

The first has red blooms.

This is a Naked Coral Tree (Erythrina coralloides). In the spring, the branches are all bare except for these beautiful red blooms. They really stand out from their surroundings.

The other tree is one that I have seen in several places in the world. Most notably, my first memories of seeing large groupings of them.

My first big memory of Jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosafolia) is from Pretoria, South Africa. I most likely had seen them before as they do grow in several parts of the US.

However, I definitely remember the tree lined streets of Pretoria in September of 2001. They were absolutely beautiful. Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City. I have also seen them in South America and Australia, but not in the large numbers that I saw in Pretoria or here in Coyoacan.

On the way to lunch today I spotted this one hanging out over one of the wide boulevards. The purple blooms are so beautiful.

When we got back to the office after lunch, I spotted another great photo opportunity.

I really like these old glass insulators. They really look nice with the Jacaranda blooming behind them.

I hope you have enjoyed this brief look at the colorful trees of Coyoacan.

That first tree is very Star Trekkie. Like when Kirk and the landing party beam down to a new planet. Where exactly are you Steven? πŸ˜‰ PS, don’t wear a red tunic while you’re there…..it never turns out well for that member of the landing party.

  2. I miss Mexico so much. Thanks for all the photos!

The flowering trees are beautiful. And, the glass insulators are fun. I can remember people collecting them when I was a child. Do people still collect them?

Steven~I saw a tree very similar to the Jacaranda in Israel. Same color of bloom, I wonder if they are the same?
