Tonight I was looking through an old scrapbook looking for some Christmas Cards so that I could make a quick post after another busy Wednesday.
My eyes chanced to wander across a really cool picture caption.
OK, I must admit that the green referred to here is the actual color the house is painted. However, the perimeter heating system would have made the house more energy efficient than previous construction methods and isn’t that what green building is all about? Plus the white asbestos shingles and extra wide overhanging eaves would have kept the house cooler during the summer months.
Green building became popular in the early 90’s, but the concept has been around throughout history. There is another article pasted in the scrapbook a few pages earlier describing another modern home that was being completed in Coin. There must have been a building boom going on in this little Iowa town.
Coin is a small town in Page County, Iowa and in 1960 had a population of only 346 people. This was down from a 1950 population of 407, so I don’t think that the building boom was very big :-). My Grandparents still lived near Coin in 1956, but had moved to Hamburg by the 1960 census.
I hope you enjoyed this little bit of Wednesday humor 🙂

We’ve actually house shopped a few homes that exact shape. People are opening up the main floors and they turn out pretty cute.
Interesting!! You come up with the most unusual topics 🙂
