November Roses

One of the things that I like about living in California is that I have roses blooming almost all year round.

As I was getting ready to leave for my Thanksgiving trip I decided to take a few pictures of my roses.St. Patrick Hybrid Tea Rose - November Roses - Roses after RainI had actually planned on spending some time cleaning up my roses, cutting back the dead blooms and thinning out some of the bushes in preparation for the big pruning time next month. However, the day started off with rain and it was too wet to work with my roses. However, the rain brought another benefit. I really love the water drops on the petals of this rose.

In this side shot you can see the lighter color of the outer leaves and the green tinge that they have. You can also see some of my other rose bushes in the background. My rose bushes are almost eight feet tall.St. Patrick Hybrid Tea Rose - November Roses - Roses after RainIn this picture you can really see the green color on the outer petals of the rose. The color is more pronounced when the bloom is in the bud stage. I bought this rose bush when my parents were visiting me about 10 years ago. I had seen some roses of this variety and really liked them, so we went looking for one. We found one at a building supply company on the outskirts of town and it was back home to plant this beautiful St. Patrick, Hybrid Tea Rose. At the same time we bought a Tropicana, which is my Mom’s favorite rose. Perhaps someday I will also share pictures of some of my Tropicana blooms.

I did a little research on the St. Patrick and found out that it was first introduced in 1996 and had been developed by an amateur rose gardener. Experts were surprised that he was able to create this hybrid as the seed parent, Brandy, was known as a poor producer of viable seeds. I am thankful for his work as this is my favorite rose. I love the very light green color of the rose as it starts to bloom and then the vibrant yellow of the full bloom.

I hope you enjoy my November roses.

Steven

This post brings back memories of my mother. She had a lovely rose garden and knew the stories behind all of the roses in it. I’ve often thought that someday I’d like to make my own rose garden and include some of the old mid-century roses like the Tropicana.

OK, I am totally jealous, those are stunning Steven. 8 feet !!! We would never get that here, we can’t even do Tea Roses…Do they have a scent? We’ll be in California in 10 days and I can’t wait. I love so many things about California and year round roses are now on the list too.
