A Special Rose

Earlier this week I saw a rose bud that told me that I would have a special rose this week.

Special Rose, Wrong color Rose, Red rose on yellow bushHere is the rose bud. You may look at this and not see what is special about it, but when you see it in context it makes more sense.

Red rose, yellow rose, wrong color roseNow do you see why it will be a special rose? Of course this is a bit out of focus as the camera focused on the rose that was closer, but you can see that it looks like it is a different color.

Pinkish red rose, Yellow Rose Bush, Wrong Color RoseHere is what the rose looked like when I got home this evening. It is a beautiful color with some pinks and maybe a bit of orange.

two color roses, same bush, wrong rose colorYou can definitely see the difference with these two blooms. Normally I have just the yellow roses that in themselves are beautiful.

Maybe once a year this rose bush will have a few roses of a different color. Sometimes they are almost red and other years they are less intense like this one.

Rose blooms - Different color on same bush - Red and YellowHere are some blooms from back in 2012 where they showed up a bit more red.

I have done a bit of research as to why this happens, but I can’t find anything definitive. This is not an example of a cane coming up from the root stock as roses on the same branch are different colors. One suggestion is that there is a mineral in the soil that causes the color change.

I will probably never know and I really don’t want to keep it from happening. It is always a nice little surprise to get the different color blooms.

Virtual Hike to Hamburg, Iowa

The latest destination on my Virtual Hike was Hamburg, Iowa.

Hamburg, Iowa is a town that has a lot of meaning to me as my Family History there goes back to the 1870’s and possibly a bit earlier. Since the town was incorporated only in 1867, you can say that they were there since almost the very beginning. More on some of those family connections in future posts.

You can see that the hike from Marysville was only 104 miles. I passed by a lot of interesting places along the way, especially once I made it to Rock Port where I also had family living near in the 1870’s.

Hamburg, Iowa, Family HistoryHamburg is not very large, with only a little over 1,000 inhabitants today. Back in the early 1900’s however it was twice as big.

You can see here that Hamburg is very close to the Missouri border. It is also only about four miles east of Nebraska.

McKissick Island, Nebraska in Missouri, Missouri River, Course Change, Oxbow LakeHowever, Hamburg is actually only about two miles from Nebraska, as it is also to the south. To learn more about why a part of Nebraska is in Missouri, see my post Missouri River Border Anomalies.

Hamburg, Iowa, Virtual Hike, Family HistoryHere is a screen shot from Google Maps Street View that shows two iconic Hamburg sites.

Stoner Drug - Hamburg, Iowa - Soda Fountain Stoner Drug is an old time drug store complete with a soda fountain. I have many memories of going there when visiting my grandparents. Click on the link for more about the drug store.

Flag Pole in Intersection - Hamburg, IowaAnother great memory of Hamburg is the flag pole in the middle of the intersection.

Hamburg Church of Christ, National Day of Prayer, Hamburg, IowaI also have many memories of the Hamburg Church of Christ. My family goes back many generations with this congregation and it is said that one of my ancestors even helped build the building. Today the building has been restored and it is a community center.

I could write a lot about Hamburg, and I already have. You can find more posts about Hamburg by using the search bar.

The next destination on my Virtual Hike will be in Missouri before again turning north into Iowa.

Have you been to Hamburg, Iowa?
