Long Days of Travel to Tokyo

Friday and Saturday were very long days of travel.

Sunrise, travel day, california, travelMy journey began as the sun was rising at home as I needed to make sure that I had plenty of time to get to the airport in case of traffic delays. After the bad traffic days in the past two weeks I was not taking any chances.

You can see that there were some clouds in the sky, but it was mostly clear for the first part of my journey.

While crossing through the East Bay it started to sprinkle and by the time I got to the airport rain had moved in.

Of course with rain the traffic slowed. Since I left home early I still made it to the airport two hours ahead of my flight and had time to relax a bit.

After we boarded we had about a half hour delay before we pulled back from the gate. The rain and wind were starting to cause some flight delays.

We were able to make up most of the time in the air during the 11 hour flight and landed just about on time.

It did not take too long to get through immigration and after about a ten minute wait for my bag I headed to the Limousine Bus ticket counter. There was a bus that left in just 10 minutes so I was very soon headed into the city.

It was starting to rain, and traffic was slow.  Lots of little delays on this trip.

Cherry Blossoms, Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan, Trees

From where the bus dropped me off I had about a 15 minute walk to the hotel near our office.

Luckily it had stopped raining as I really wanted to get in a good walk and not take a taxi. I knew that I would be stopping to take a lot of pictures along the way as the cherry blossoms are just starting to appear.

I saw the beautiful cherry tree in the picture above as I walked by Sophia University.

Tokyo Hotel Room, Business Hotel, Tokyo, small hotel room

Finally I made it to the hotel where I will stay for my first two nights. It is the first of four hotels that I will stay in during the trip.

The room is small, but has what I need. Most importantly, a bed to sleep on after a long journey.

As I left home the sun was coming up on Friday morning and when I arrived at the hotel the sun was starting to set on Saturday night.

Preflight Snack

After a long drive to the airport, that was slowed by a rainy morning, I am now having a snack while waiting for boarding time.

Fruit, snack, United club, airport

It is good that I left early this morning as the estimated arrival time slipped almost a half hour during the drive.

Getting through security was a little easier than my last flight, but I am a bit tired of the changing interpretation of rules.

Perhaps it is a training issue, as it seems that the people who question what is in my bag are usually new.

My gripe this morning is minor, but the attitude of the TSA agent was a bit upsetting to me. For years I have left my camera in my backpack or carry on bag and have never taken it out. Today, it was larger than a cell phone and I was rudely lectured for not following the rules.

My backup camera, which is the same size, was in my backpack and was not commented on. I guess it all depends on how you measure. The camera is thicker than a cell phone, but length and width is less.

OK, rant over. Now time to relax before getting settled in for a totally packed eleven hour flight. At least I am in Economy Plus so have some good leg room and it is on a 787 so the air in the cabin is fresher.
