Friday is the 88th anniversary of the February 26, 1933 groundbreaking for the Golden Gate Bridge.
This has me thinking of historic bridges.
Here we see a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge taken from the Marin Headlands.
The Mossdale Bridge crosses the San Joaquin River in the Central Valley of California.
The bridge was completed on September 1969 about four months after the final spike was driven at Promontory Summit. This bridge is the Final Link in the transcontinental railroad.
In California the railhead was in Sacramento until the completion of the Mossdale Bridge.
This is the Burgauer Brücke in Jena-Burgau, which is in the south part of Jena, Germany.
The bridge was built on the site of an older wooden bridge. The older bridge was in existence by at least 1484. The wooden bridge was replaced by a stone bridge sometime in the late 1400’s or early 1500’s.
Here are some old bridges spanning the Cam River in Cambridge, England.
This is an old stone bridge that was built in the Song Dynasty town of Gaoqiao. The area is now part of the Pudong district in Shanghai, China.
