Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge

Tonight I thought I would share a few interesting pictures that I took at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England back in September 2017.

Fitzwilliam MuseumNear the entrance is this relief of King Ashurnasirpal II of Syria (883-859 BC).

Fitzwilliam Museum I took a picture of this section of a sarcophagus because of the elephant carving.

Fitzwilliam MuseumUnfortunately, I caught a big shadow in this picture. This is the Cylinder of Neriglissar, and it records his works as King of Bablyon (560-556 BC).

Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge England, Museum, ArchaeologyI took this picture as I found pottery fragments, including the distinctive handle, similar to this bowl while digging at Lachish.

Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge England, Museum, ArchaeologyThis shows several necklaces but the one that interested me was the one with blue beads. The beads are made from faience, and look very similar to one that we found in our square at Lachish. There is also a similar necklace at the Israel Museum I had seen earlier. I was able to identify the bead when it was found and it was confirmed by the archaeologist.

It more interesting to visit museums after you have been on an archaeologic dig.

On My Table – IV – Chateau

Tonight in my On My Table series I will  show what has been slowly built during the last few months.

ankerstein chateau, blocks, anker, building, on my table, hobbies. This is one of the largest buildings I have built with Ankerstein. The plan is titled Lustschlösschen mit Torhaus or Chateau with doorkeeper’s house and is built with set 24.

ankerstein chateau, blocks, anker, building, on my table, hobbies. The tower is only 27 inches hight, so not as tall as the last one I built. There is a lot of detail in the building and it was a challenge to build in some spots. There are a few departures from the plan when I had a few troubles or were missing stones from when I used the wrong ones early in the build.

There is a way that I have found to minimize the red showing through on the roof, but I didn’t use the blue pieces of paper I sometime use on this build.

It is relaxing to build with Ankerstein, but can also be frustrating. The stones that the building is made of are simply stacked on top of each other. No snapping or gluing the layers together. Just good old fashioned gravity. Despite this the structure if pretty stable, as long as I am careful while typing on the other end of the table.

The structure will soon be taken down, and I will build another one.
