Washington’s Crossing

This week I have been reading Washington’s Crossing by David Hackett Fischer.

washington's Crossing, delaware, new jersey, revolutionary warThe book is a really good history about the Revolutionary War in New Jersey.

washington's Crossing, delaware, new jersey, revolutionary warAs I have been reading the book I have had memories of visiting Washington’s Crossing during a visit to New Jersey back in the late 90’s.

washington's Crossing, delaware, new jersey, revolutionary warAt the sight where Washington crossed the Delaware River, they have a nice sculpture based on the famous painting by Emmanuel Leutze.

In reading the book I have a better understanding about how important the battles near the end of 1776 were in the Revolutionary War.

Mercer Oak, Princeton Battlefield Park, IQ, Albert EinsteinAs I read about the Battle of Princeton, I remember visiting the site of that battle and seeing the Mercer Oak. You may have seen this famous oak tree in a movie starring Meg Ryan.

Horse

Tonight I have been reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks so have been thinking about some of the pictures of horses that I have shared through the years.

Horse in Turkey - Cave Hotel - CappadociaThe book is about the race horse Lexington, but is set in both the past and the present. I have really enjoyed the books I have read by Brooks. She has written some very good Historical Fiction books on different subjects.

Horse, Grandpa, farm, family, IowaI like reading books about horses as it reminds me that it has not been too long ago when horses were very important to the lives of our ancestors, especially if you were a farmer.

Above is a picture of my grandfather and his horse.

Amish House, 8 horse hitch, Arthur Illinois, Tom Vance, Moving Amish House, Belgian Horses, Amish Horse, Tom VanceIf you have been following my blog you know that I have Amish ancestry, and still today horses are very important in their culture.

Stalking Horse Bidder - Hostess Brands - Dolly Madison - TwinkiesOne of my favorite pictures of horses I have taken was at an estancia in Argentina. My sister and I visited the estancia on our way to the airport in Buenos Aires after our cruise to Antarctica.

White Horse, Cave Hotel, Cappadocia, TurkeyThis horse, along with the one in the first picture, were close to the cave hotel I stayed in when I visited the Cappadocian region of Turkey.

I have also been thinking about some of the books I have read about horses in the past. I may have to read some of them again.
