The next destination on my Virtual Hike was Rockland, Maine.
No family connection for this stop, and it will be awhile before I again have one. This stop is further up Highway 1 from Arundel, Maine as I head north toward Canada.
The route up to Rockland is close to the coast in most places, but also had to work around inlets along the coast.
Rockland is in Penobscot Bay and is home to a lot of lobster boats. Each year the Maine Lobster Festival is held there.
Rockland is also home to the Maine Lighthouse Museum. There are a lot of lighthouses along the Maine coast.
Here you can see an overview of Penobscot Bay and the many docks and boats in the harbor area.
The Virtual Hike now continues north along the coast of Maine, but not too close as this would involve a lot of back and forth through the inlets. I need to be further inland to follow a straighter path. The next big destinations are in Canada and include several places where my ancestors lived and some important places near them.
