Do you know who wrote the Professor Challenger books?
Here is a hint. He also created the best known fictional detective.
Yes, I am speaking of Sherlock Holmes.
Many people do not know about Professor Challenger who was also created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
I have only read one of the Professor Challenger stories. The first of the stories is The Lost World which is about a group of explorers who are on an expedition to explore a plateau in the Amazon Basin. They encounter both primitive men and also dinosaurs who have survived through time. Of course many of you may have read The Lost World by Michael Chrichton or seen the movie. I contend that even though Doyle was not credited, that this book was the inspiration for Jurassic Park. See my post The Lost World.
I was able to request a copy of The Complete Professor Challenger Stories from another library.
The book arrived at the library on Thursday and I was able to pick it up today.
I plan on reading The Lost World again so that I refresh my memory of the story and more importantly the character of Professor Challenger.
Here is a list of the five books:
- The Lost World
- The Poison Belt
- The Land of Mist
- The Disintegration Machine
- When the World Screamed
The Lost Word and The Land of the Mist are full length novels and the other three are shorter stories.
I am looking forward to finally reading all the Professor Challenger stories. It has been a planned challenge for a long time.
Have you read any of these stories?
Steven
